I know one thing and that is playing parlay cards during football season is one of my favorite things to do.

When I have friends come to town the first thing they do is go down to the book, get all the parlay cards, head to their room and fill them out for the next day. Win or lose they have a great time and they love to play 10 team parlays and teasers. They have never hit one but the fun of it is what counts. It gives small and medium players a chance to turn a toothpick into a lumber yard.

I play several cards every weekend, not just one or two cards. I love trying to get the best of the number especially on games that are two points out of whack. I really think I am getting the best of it, and I do on some of the games. But when you are looking to hit six, eight and ten team parlays, some of the best lines come in and most don’t.

It’s the fun of playing and the shot of winning. Times change but some bettors don’t and one thing this bettor knows is people. They love to play parlay cards and it’s a big bottom line for the books. Always has been ever since parlay cards came into play.

When I was behind the counter at the Stardust and Excalibur in the 90’s we would hold at least 28% to 30% on parlay cards and that is a big number. As the sports business becomes more corporate the goose who laid the golden egg could be apps. Now, even this old stuck-in-the-past bettor loves apps and betting on them from home.

So why travel and fight traffic plus the long lines in the sportsbooks? Just stay at home and play off apps. Sometimes getting what you wish for could be a very dangerous thing, especially if it keeps bettors out of your casino.

Sports and horse bettors will go eat and play the slots. Keep them home and you’re golden goose egg could turn into fool’s gold, just one old bettor’s opine.

Last week Utah was a no show or we could have gone 4-0 for the week but we will move on to some really good games this weekend and some good parlay card games for us to use in our ten teamers.

The Game of the Week comes this Saturday with the Ohio State Buckeyes hosting Penn State. We will have a pick on the game below.

NC State +7.5 at Notre Dame: Yes, the Irish, who we had big time last week, are coming off that easy revenge win vs. USC and you may think bounce. We think not as this is revenge game No. 2 for the Irish who look to avenge last year’s 10-3 loss in Raleigh. Bet this game early and knock the number down to -7. Then use the Irish on all teasers at -1. NOTRE DAME

TCU -6 at Iowa State: Huge game here for both teams especially undefeated TCU who has visions of BCS, but they could overlook the Cyclones with the improving Longhorns next. Iowa State is looking for revenge from last year’s humiliating 41-20 loss in Ames. The Cyclones’ only two losses came vs. Iowa by 3 points and Texas by 10. They have won three straight games including a win over Oklahoma. We will be taking all the way. IOWA STATE

Penn State +6 at Ohio State: This line could drop a tick or two and we hope it does. We will be laying the 6 at home with Urban “the legend” Meyer looking for revenge from last year’s 24-21 loss in a whiteout at State College. There is no one better in college football than Meyer when it comes to getting revenge – 14-0 in the spot vs. teams .500 or higher. The Lions will come to play and are a very good team but that one road game vs. Iowa left me with this pick. A week off for the Buckeyes says run to the window and lay the 6. OHIO STATE

UNLV +18 at Fresno State: Hope this line drops a tick or two but must lay the wood with the 5-2 Bulldogs whose only losses came vs. Alabama and Washington. They did cover both games and their ATS record this year is a perfect 7-0, lay it! FRESNO STATE

Last week: 3-1

Season: 26-22-2

Mark it down all you who are going to bet on the Breeders Cup. Friday, Nov. 3 at 8:30 a.m. is a free seminar in the Palace Station racebook with coffee and donuts at no charge. Our host of hosts will be Race Day Las Vegas voice Ralph Siraco along with myself and Professor Gordon Jones.

Our horse play of the week comes at Santa Anita in the 3rd race with 2yo maidens going down the hill. No. 10 Powerful Thirst gets a great post in his first on the grass. We love Prat sticking with this colt and his dam Sky Marni has dropped two winners from her three starters – both coming on the grass. We should get a square price.

See you at the BC seminar. Play a ten team parlay card. You could be walking around lucky and not even know it.
