Starting Pitchers

Tonight’s pitching matchup will feature two guys with electric stuff but may be more suited for a bullpen role. However, injuries have forced both players into the rotation, making tonight’s pitching matchup very interesting for us bettors.

Philadelphia Phillies: Matt Strahm

2022 Stats: 50 G, 4-4, 44.2 IP, 3.83 ERA, 52 K, 0.3 fWAR

Strahm came out of the Red Sox bullpen last year and was a reliable arm for a team whose pitching staff was amongst the worst in baseball. He did not pitch much in 2021, appearing in only six games and registering 6.2 IP, and his numbers are down from his 2020 season which he put up a 2.61 ERA.

However, Strahm raised his K/9 to 10.48 last season, his highest since his rookie year with Kansas City. He has had a bit of a problem giving up the longball (1.24 HR/9), and he is going up against a Yankees lineup that is slashing .260/.355/.504 with a wRC+ of 132 to begin the season. Last season, the Yankees hit the fourth-most home runs off left-handed pitching, and with their hot start this year, Strahm will need his best stuff.

New York Yankees: Domingo German

2022 Stats: 15 G, 2-5, 72.1 IP, 3.61 ERA, 58 K, 0.7 f WAR

German has been one of the Yankees’ prized pitching prospects for a few years, and while he has not totally lived up to that, German had a good 2022 in only 14 starts. He made his first start in late July for the Yankees last season, and he finished the year with a career-best 3.61 ERA. His xERA of 3.78 proves that his stuff is good enough to be a starter on this team.

While he has had trouble staying on the field, we are only betting on his arm talent for tonight. His durability is cause for concern in New York, but he has cut down on his HR/9 and BB/9, and while the strikeout rate is down, so is the amount of hard hits he is allowing. He has had trouble with the long ball for his career, but with the Phillies’ banged-up lineup, he should have an easier time.

Phillies vs. Yankees Lineups

Even without Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins, the Phillies’ offense has still put the ball in play and put this team in a good position to win. Through four games, the Phillies have a wRC+ of 108, and they are slashing .287/.325/.448. The problem is that they just are not scoring enough runs. They have put up only 12 runs, seven of which came in the season’s first game.

Philadlphia’s scoring will improve as players get more comfortable with the season and when Harper comes back in July. The fact that they are not scoring runs and only have one home run on the season is disappointing but is not cause for concern just yet. The pitching staff is what might keep this team from repeating as National League Champions.

On the other side, New York looks like its usual self on offense. They rank ninth in runs scored, have hit nine home runs, and key players such as Judge, Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, and even the young guys Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera have all been good to start the season.

With how hot the Yankees started last season, this could be another year New York sprints out to the best record in baseball to begin the season. Heck, even the pitching has been good for the Yankees, something that caused significant concern heading into the season due to many injuries.

Even without the excellent pitching performance to start the year, the Yankees score six runs per game and rank fifth in wOBA (.379).

Phillies vs. Yankees Prediction

We have two pitchers prone to giving up the long ball and going up against two offenses prone to hitting the long ball. This is usually all we need to hear to take the over in this game, but the wind will be blowing in in New York tonight, and we have to factor in the Phillies’ inability to score.

With a pitcher in German who has struggled to keep the ball in the park, this is the perfect night for Philadelphia to break through and put up a monster number. However, despite the Phillies not scoring a lot of runs to open the season, they have been getting guys on base all season but have not been cashing in. Since the season’s first game, the Phillies are only averaging 1.6 runs per game.

We are unconcerned about the Yankees’ ability to score tonight, especially against Strahm. It will just come down to how well Philadelphia’s lineup fares tonight. Even if they score only a few runs, New York is also primed for a big night, and this one should go over the total.

Pick: Over 8.5 via DraftKings

Phillies vs. Yankees Best Prop Bet

Kyle Schwarber Anytime Home Run (+250, DraftKings)

It is about time the Phillies’ offense got rolling, and it starts with the guy with the most power in the lineup. Last season, Schwarber’s overall value went down at the plate, but he still put up a 128 wRC+, .504 SLG, and he mashed a career-high 46 home runs.

Of course, with a pure-power hitter like this, there is a lot of room for error, especially if you can get him to chase the slider. Tonight, he has the luxury of not only going up against a home run pitcher but also playing at Yankees stadium, which has one of the shorter right fields in baseball.

With how well Schawrber swung the bat in the postseason and the WBC, he is due for a breakout performance, and that begins tonight.
