As downtown Las Vegas continues its transformation from its seedy past to the trendy and hip place it’s become, I find myself going downtown more and more.

This past weekend, the wife and I went to the East Fremont side of downtown to check out one of the most popular coffee bars downtown. PublicUs, located at 1126 Fremont Street, isn’t just a coffee bar. In addition to great coffees you can get fresh pastries, cookies and other desserts as well as breakfast and lunch.

Let’s start with the sweets as they have freshly made zucchini bread, scones, muffins, cakes, croissants and cookies. Everything looked so good and even though we were ordering breakfast items, the chocolate chip cookies looked so good I had to have one while I was waiting for my breakfast. Let me just say that was one of the best cookies I’ve had.

For breakfast, Lori ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with scrambled eggs. Lori is my biscuits-and-gravy connoisseur as that’s her go-to breakfast when we eat out. She said they were good but not the best around town, and trust me, she has had biscuits and gravy all over the valley.

For me, I went with the Brekkie Sandwich, which was two farm fresh scrambled eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese served on a fresh baked Hawaiian Roll for $9. Or for $2 more you can add red skin breakfast potatoes. My sandwich and potatoes were very good, and I was filled up for $11. It also came with some tossed greens on the plate as well.

Some of the other specials on the breakfast menu are the Mahalo Special, which was two eggs, Spam, Portuguese Sausage, steamed rice, house pickles and kimchi. The Brekkie Burrito was a very popular item as several tables were enjoying PublicUs version of a Breakfast Burrito.

Some of the other popular menu items off the brunch menu are Steak and Eggs, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Grilled Chipotle Chicken Sandwich. There are also several vegan options on the menu, including a Vegan Burger for $12.

The design of the shop is very friendly and inviting. There are several picnic tables in the restaurant complete with a tree in the middle of the table. The décor really gives PublicUs a homey and relaxing feel to the place.

There were people catching up over a cup of coffee, people working on their laptops and families enjoying a meal together on the weekend. PublicUs was packed and it’s easy to see why it’s one of downtown’s favorite locals’ destinations.

The entire wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful. You generally got the feeling they really enjoyed working here. I give PublicUs a rating of 3.50 Forks.
