The Maple Leafs are hot. They are 6-1-3 in their last 10 games; the Rangers are 6-4. Both teams are coming off impressive wins on Saturday. Toronto defeated Pittsburgh, 7-0; the Rangers won at Boston, 2-1, in overtime.

The Maple Leafs’ victory over the Penguins might have had special meaning. It was the first trip back to Toronto for Pittsburgh general manager Kyle Dubas, who was fired by the Maple Leafs after they lost in the second round of the playoffs last season.

If you need help picking a side for this matchup, we have you covered as we preview this game and give our best Rangers vs. Maple Leafs betting pick.

New York Rangers (21-7-1, 14-15 ATS)

The Rangers were stung in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last season by the rival New Jersey Devils in seven games. Rangers players have talked about this season being one of redemption.

So far, the Rangers’ season has met their own lofty expectations. New York is among the top teams in the Eastern Conference — on merit. The Rangers are in first place in the Metropolitan Division with 43 points, tied with the Bruins for most points in the Eastern Conference.

New York is a statistical dynamo, particularly on special teams. The Rangers rank third in power-play percentage (29.6) and sixth in penalty-kill (85.3). The Rangers rank third in power-play goals with 28. They are eighth in goals-against average at 2.72. They are ranked 12th in scoring at 3.20 goals per game.

The Rangers have gotten excellent goaltending from Igor Shesterkin. He is 11-7 in 18 games with a 2.91 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. His backup is veteran Jonathan Quick, who is 9-0-0 with a 2.09 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. Quick won two Stanley Cups with the Los Angeles Kings.

In six career games against Toronto, Shesterkin has a 4-1-1 record with a 2.15 GAA and a .934 save percentage. He is expected to start tonight.

Two Rangers have hit double digits in goal-scoring. Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider each have 16 goals. Panarin, in an MVP-type season, also has 26 assists. Adam Fox, the 2021 Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman, has three goals and 18 assists.

He also quarterbacks the Rangers’ excellent power play.

Toronto Maple Leafs (16-6-6, 8-18 ATS)

Toronto was stung in the second round of the playoffs last season, losing in five games to the eighth-seeded Florida Panthers.

Auston Matthews is tied for the league lead in goals with 23.

The Maple Leafs rank second in goal scoring at 3.64 per game. Their power play is ranked fifth at 25.9 percent, and they are tied for 11th in power-play goals with 22.

The Maple Leafs’ penalty-kill is ranked 16th at 80 percent. Their goals-against average is ranked 17th at 3.18.

Rangers vs Maple Leafs Prediction: Toronto Continues to Roll

This is the teams’ second meeting of the season. Toronto won in New York, 7-3, on Dec. 12. If you believe in revenge, look for the Rangers. If you think the Maple Leafs have the upper hand, Toronto might be your play. Toronto is 9-4-2 at home, but the Rangers are an impressive 11-4-1 on the road.

The Maple Leafs are playing with a great deal of confidence. They crushed the Penguins on Saturday without Matthews, who had the flu. He practiced Monday according to the Toronto Star, and is expected to play tonight.

William Nylander also is having an impressive season. He is the Leafs’ leading scorer with 15 goals and 25 assists.

Toronto rookie starting goaltender Joseph Woll is out with an ankle injury, so expect Martin Jones to start. He is 3-0 with a 1.86 goals-against average and one shutout. He was in goal in the Leafs’ win last week in New York and he shut out the Penguins on Saturday.

Statistics lean toward the Rangers but the Leafs are the team on a roll… and with a hot goaltender.
