THE PREAKNESS STAKES
PIMLICO RACE COURSE BALTIMORE MARYLAND
At this point the best race in the Kentucky Derby preps was the Louisiana Derby as Palace Malice the 7th place finisher came back and just got beat on the line in the Blue Grass Stakes. Mylute was a close 5th in the Derby with Revolutionary finishing 3rd and Golden Soul finishing second behind the big horse Orb. One of the new faces in here will be Departing who finished 3rd in the Louisiana Derby and came back to squash them in the Illinois Derby except because of politics he got no points for the win.
Besides the addition of Departing we will also get the speedy Lukas runner the big long shot Titletown Five who is partly owned by football Hall of Famer Paul Hornung and the Bob Baffert runner Govenor Charlie.
So in this nine horse field we get three new faces and five who could not beat Orb who is listed at even money in the morning line. So there is just two ways to attack this race and that would be play the trifecta and superfecta.
No. 1 Orb on top with No. 5 Mylute, No. 4 Departing and No. 8 Govenor Charlie second using all in the third and fourth spots and using the same three horses third. Here is how the ticket will look:
1 with 4-5-8 with 2-3-4-5-8-9 and 1 with 2-3-4-5-8-9 with 4-5-8 in the tri’s
1 with 4-5-8 with 2-3-4-5-8-9 with 2-3-4-5-8-9 and 1 with 2-3-4-5-8-9 with 4-5-8 with 2-3-4-5-8-9 in the supers and play a small dime super using the 4-5-8 on top with 1 with all with all.
This is one bad way to start the day at Hollywood Park as we get our usual small field in the first race with trainer John Shirreffs dropping two in from the straight maiden company and sending them sprinting. No. 1 Awesome Address and No. 6 Far Rockaway but neither have any early speed and the one that may have some early foot is the first time starter No. 4 Freakin Rocket. 1-4-6
At least we get seven potential runners in this race. No. 2 Itsalwayssomething has done little wrong in his two starts and now gets his first start off the 50k Sadler claim and he hits at around .32% first off the claim. No. 4 Derringer is the stablemate of Itsalwayssomething and looks to be the speed. 2-4
No. 1 Corlett Drive comes off her maiden breaker and will now try the grass but has three good works since that win. No. 2 Nospeightintended has been in steady work mode on the grass here and did break her maiden going down the hill. No. 4 My Cinsation looks to be the one to beat as she is 2-for-2 sprinting on the grass albeit going down the hill at Santa Anita but her last work says she is on edge. No. 7 Wednesday is in top form and gets Bejarano back who won with her one race back sprinting on the grass. No. 8 Darling Dodie won on this 6 furlong turf course last June and was a good third almost a year ago to the day here last May 17th. 1-2-4-7-8
No. 1 Gifting exits our HTW list after losing her first start at .60 cents on the dollar. She ran a nice even race that day after breaking slow and bobbling at the start. She will show her real self today. 1
THE 100K FRAN’S VALENTINE
No. 1 Top Kisser has won 3 straight on the grass at this mile distance but all were at Santa Anita. No. 2 Sugarinthemorning finished second in this race last year. No. 3 Unusual Hottie had her prep for this and has never been off the board on this turf course. No. 7 Butterfly Beach is a 5yo Mare who was last seen at Del Mar back in 2011, she has never been defeated routing on the grass. 1-2-3-7
No. 1 Rock U Up looks very dangerous in here at a price. No. 2 Salty Forecast has the hot combo of Maldonado and Miller. 1-2
No. 2 Mr. Bossy Pants can be depended on to be right there sprinting on the grass. No. 5 Blue Jay Attack will be making his usual late run. 2-5
No. 5 Sports Report exits our HTW list off a solid second last time out when dropped back to this level. No. 7 Storm Castle drops into a maiden claimer after a troubled start with straight maidens in his one and only. Trainer Kruljac has won with 4 of his 9 starters at the meet and he sends out a live first timer in No. 8 Jazillionaire who is a must use. 5-7-8
No. 3 Very Elusive is in from Ireland and looks live. No. 4 Rock Me Baby has hit the board in all five of his starts with 3 wins and 2 seconds. No. 6 He Be Fire N Ice won the only time he went a mile on the grass.
THE GRADE 2 MARJORIE L. EVERETT
Gomez gets back on No. 3 More Chocolate and he won with this filly the last time he was on in the Grade 2 La Canada. No. 4 Lady of Fifty gets Bejarano and she won the only time she ran here in the Grade 2 Bayakoa at this 1-1/16 distance. 3-4
No. 3 Goodtobewild has finished second in both of her starts at Santa Anita so maybe Holly will be the answer. No. 6 Maddog Maddie gets a needed drop into a maiden claimer, she gets the wakeup call here. No. 9 Only Josie Knows looks very live at a price as does No. 11 Manta who has been looking for a race.
No. 1 Foxie Moose drops trying to cash as does No. 3 Sheza Trip, No. 5 Our Black Beauty and No. 6 Vamp Mobile. 1-3-5-6
No. 3 Elizabeth A is in top form and will take some beating. No. 1 Gotham Spirit ran a half length behind Elizabeth last time out and will try and turn the tables. No. 4 Follow the Crowd is also in top form and has won 4 of her six starts here. No. 6 Xcuse Me Monto has won 5 of her 9 starts here and is also in top from in what amounts to another wide open six horse field. 1-3-4-6
No. 1 Katy’s Star exits our HTW list off a hard fought win last time out at this 5½ furlong distance. No. 3 Rathmoon is her stabemate and comes off a rousing maiden breaker. 1-3
Exacta box 1-3 and win on 1
No. 1 Unusual Lover ships in looking for softer on the grass. No. 2 As Good As Gold and No. 9 Unusual Meeting look to be the main danger. 1-2-9
No. 2 Tonzatrouble won at this level one race back and exits a key race, we will single. 2
Win and place 2
No. 1 Eyesablazin is in from Santa Anita off a nose loss with tougher and now will try the grass. No. 5 Blue Line Cat gets his second start at this level and has run good in the past going long on the grass with better. 1-5
No. 5 Soldiers Point has been stuck in second but could break that today. No. 6 Morning Fog loses Baze so the price will go up and we like that. 5-6
No. 2 Big Jim won huge in his first turf try last time out here. No. 5 Bomb Site has run back-to-back big races on the grass. 2-5
No. 2 Toss the Dice drops into an action spot as does No. 6 Reagan Republican. 2-6
