SANTA ANITA OPENING DAY

Race 1

We start the meet with 2yo fillies going a flat mile on the dirt. No. 2 Georgia gets her second start for Baffert and she is sent long after a good debut going 5½ furlongs. No. 3 Arethusa will be a good price off her one and only start; a race in which she hopped at the start and really never got into it after that, she is bred to go long and Gomez will give her a try. Baffert who has Georgia in this race also sends out two more (before scratches) No. 5 Lady Bugatti who we will pass on and No. 7 Be Proud who ran a nice even race going 7 furlongs at Fairplex in the P D Shepherd at even money. Horses who ran good on the Fairplex dirt can transfer that form to Santa Anita. 2-3-7

Race 2

Now we get 2yo 50k maiden claimers going 6 furlongs. No. 4 Oh Daddy Oh was sent off at even money in his one try at Del Mar with straight maidens and now drops into a maiden claimer, he will be out winging but he will need to contend with the fast No. 12 Steppingood and that could set things up for someone off the pace. No. 3 Slewpy Again just did miss at this level going 5½ furlongs at Del Mar and now he’s getting an extra half a furlong and that could do the trick and the price will be right. There are several first time starters in here so we will need to do some tote watching for the live ones. One of those could be a first time starter out of the Baffert barn, No. 5 Infosec. One other runner in this race that could make an impact is No. 7 Compulsive who has run three good races with a narrow miss at this 50k level at Del Mar and he gets a big rider switch to Bejarano, he is a must use. 3-7

Race 3

In race three we get 25k claimers going 7 furlongs. No. 1 Chicsdigtheshark owns 3 wins from 4 starts here and has won two out of three at this 7 furlong distance and his speed will play well from the rail. No. 2 Dress Code drops a tad and has a big 5 furlong work for this on the 19th. No. 8 Trulee Scrappin had some problems before the start last time out but still ran a huge fourth losing by 1¾ of a length. Julien Leparoux rides for his father in law Mike Mitchell and we will also ride along. 1-2-8

WIN AND PLACE 8

Race 4

We get our first grass race of the meet and we have straight maidens going a flat mile. No. 1 Navarre had a lot of chances in France albeit with tougher and now gets his second try in the states. Bejarano will ride for O’Neill, he will get a perfect ground saving trip from the rail. No. 3 Empty Headed will find a fast pace to make his late run and he gets the very patient Leparoux in the irons. 1-3

Race 5

$12,500 claimers going 6½ furlongs, this is a very wide open race so do not take a short price. No. 12 Orangeyouacutie will be ridden by a real cutie in Chantal Sutherland-Kruse, he gets a drop in class and the price will be right. No. 11 Life Rule also looks to have a big shot at a price and this will be only his 3rd lifetime start. No. 13 Hurry Home Clover has been routing and now will go 6½ furlongs, he has a shot.

Race 6

Down the hill we go, No. 12 Blu Jon gets a great post for this race and has finished second in both of his previous starts going down the hill and he has never been off the board in his four race career. No. 11 D’Obsession also gets a good post for this 6½ furlong downhill turf sprint and he has a win and two seconds from three tries going down the hill. The horse on the inside that has a big shot is No. 2 Yankee Rebel who ran second by a nostril out of post position two in his only try going down the hill, Bejarano was on that day and he will be back aboard today. 2-11-12

Exacta box 2-11-12

Race 7

3yo and up go 1-1/16 on the dirt, No. 2 Tiz the Truth has run two good races from four starts and both came here, Baffert and Gary Stevens hook up. Baffert also sends out the very speedy No. 3 Imperial Fortune who took them wire-to-wire at this distance at Del Mar in his last start. No. 8 Omega Star will sit off the pace and try and run them down in the stretch, he has two wins here and a bullet work. No. 9 Northern Iowa will also be making at late run at them as Gomez gets his second shot riding this 4yo colt.

2-3-8-9

Race 8

THE GRADE 3 EDDIE D

6½ FURLONGS ON THE GRASS DOWN THE HILL

No. 4 Boat Trip is one for one going down the hill and has a good last work and Gomez gets the call. Trainer Steve Asmussen sends out No. 5 Unbridled’s Note who owns 2 wins and a second going down the hill and the second came in the BC turf sprint. No. 8 Chips All In also owns a win over this downhill turf course and it came in the Grade 3 San Simeon last April. No. 3 Caracortado is the class, he comes off a long layoff but has been working very good, if he is ok he wins. 3-4-5-8

Race 9

No. 1 Fly High is back in 7 days and gets a turn back in distance and his second start off the O’Neill claim. No. 9 Wildcat Candy has been the beaten favorite in his last two starts and gets a slight drop in class. No. 10 Tale Be Told gets his second start off the layoff and he ran two good races here last year. 1-9-10

Race 5

No. 1 Red Hot Rocket gets her second start and an extra half a furlong which will help her chances. No. 2 Corduroy is in from Emerald Downs, she gets a drop in class in this her second start and the filly who beat her last out came right back to score. No. 6 Toomuchisnotenough is a live first time starter out of the Bill Morey barn, she has some good win early breeding. 1-2-6
