Entering this game, Colorado is only 2-4 this month, including two losses in their last three games. Meanwhile, Buffalo has not been much better, losing five of its last seven and falling deeper behind in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Even though the Avalanche are still atop the Central division, they need to clean things up fast, as the Dallas Stars are right on their tail. While Buffalo is vulnerable, they still have one of the more talented rosters in the NHL and should not be taken lightly tonight.

If you need help picking a side for this matchup, we have got you covered as we preview this game and give our best Sabres vs. Avalanche betting pick.

Buffalo Sabres (12-14-3, 15-14 ATS)

The Sabres have had an odd season. They entered 2023 as one of the more talented teams in hockey, but they just cannot find any consistency. They have only won back-to-back games once this season, which came at the end of October.

While they won their last game against Arizona, tonight will be a much more formidable challenge. The Avalanche are one of the better 5-on-5 teams in the NHL, and the Sabres have allowed the sixth-most goals at full strength.

The defense has been decent, allowing just over three goals per game and a 2.72 xGA per 60. Luckily, Buffalo will be returning Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in between the pipes tonight, which will be his first start since Dec. 3.

Luukkonen is putting together one of his best seasons, with a .907 SV% and .64 QS%. He should give this team an extra boost on defense, which will be much needed against a top-scoring Colorado attack. The problem is Buffalo is not putting the puck in the net or getting much opportunity.

The Sabres rank 20th in goals (84), 18th in shots per game (30.3), and 22nd in xG% (48.91%). While they have some great offensive players, such as Jeff Skinner and JJ Peterka, both of whom have 12 goals on the season, there is not a lot of fear from this Buffalo attack. Getting Tage Thompson back from injury certainly helps, but this is not an offense you can trust on any given night, despite the talent they possess.

Sabres Betting Trends

  • Buffalo is 2-8 SU in its last 10 games against Colorado.
  • Buffalo is 3-7 SU in its last 10 road games.
  • Buffalo is 2-9 SU in its last 11 games in Colorado.

Colorado Avalanche (17-9-2, 13-15 ATS)

Despite its struggles this month, the Colorado Avalanche is still one of the best teams in the NHL. On the season, Colorado ranks fourth in goals scored (99), ninth in shots per game (32.3), and sixth in unblocked shot attempts, which signals they are taking and making high-quality looks.

However, their offense has cooled down this month, and the Avalanche are starting to lose their grip in the Central division. In six games played this month, Colorado is 2-4, and they are only scoring 2.8 goals per game, but they are still taking 33 shots per night.

This could mean a couple of things: they are playing on tired legs or just have been simply unlucky this month. Given how much firepower this offense has, this could be a spot where the Avalanche put on a big show, especially against an average Buffalo defense.

The lack of scoring has been concerning, but when you have elite playmakers such as Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon, you have an advantage over almost every team in the league.

Defensively, Colorado has been solid at killing power plays and limiting shots. However, Alexandar Georgiev’s play has been spotty, as evidenced in Monday’s win over the Flames when Georgiev was pulled for Ivan Prosvetov. The Avalanche are expected to turn back to Georgiev tonight, given that they are playing a weak Buffalo scoring unit.

Avalanche Betting Trends

  • The total has gone UNDER in four of Colorado’s last six games against Buffalo.
  • Colorado is 2-5 SU in its last seven games.
  • Colorado is 6-2 SU in its last eight home games.

Sabres vs. Avalanche Prediction: Colorado Cruises to Home Victory

Both teams are not playing very well right now, but the Avalanche have a clear advantage tonight. Not only do they have some of the best goal-scorers in the league, but they have been unbeatable at Ball Arena over the last two seasons, including a 10-4 record this year.

The Avalanche are just the superior team in every phase of the game. While Buffalo is getting its starting goaltender back, Luukkonen hasn’t played in over a week, and this is a heck of a team to try and shake the rust off against.

Colorado is a massive favorite on the ML tonight , which is a little too rich for our liking. Betting on the puck line in hockey is not always a wise strategy, but we can get plus money on the Avs to cover the -1.5 spread, and this is a good spot for a dominating victory.

If you are uncomfortable laying the points with Colorado tonight, you can also take their moneyline odds in regulation, which sits around -160 at DraftKings. However, we will take the value and back Colorado to win by at least two tonight.
