There is nothing I like better than trying someplace new and it being good.

What’s even better is when that place is what I like to refer to as a “Mom-and-Pop” place. I enjoy doing reviews of these places as I love seeing the passion that the owners put into their craft.

This week, I found such a place and it was so good I made two trips just days apart.

The Sandy Crab is located inside The Campus Commons Food Court at 6475 West Charleston Boulevard and it’s a hidden gem. If you have gone to any food festivals around town, you may already have tried their food, but until now that was the only way to get their great seafood.

The building that they are located in is what I refer to as a business incubator where smaller businesses can get a start without the big cost of renting or owning their own building. Several businesses rent space in the building and share a common food court seating area. This is a great way for a business to build a following before making the leap to a stand-alone location. 

The Sandy Crab is all about crab and other seafood delights as the name would suggest. On my first visit, I had an order of the large seasoned Peel ‘N’ Eat Shrimp that were served warm with cocktail sauce. This was a great start to my meal.

I also ordered the crab cake sliders and fries. The crab cakes were fantastic — all jumbo lump crab meat — and unlike so many places that cut corners and cost, these crab cakes were all crab. I highly recommend the Crab cakes either by themselves or as sliders.

I visited on a Tuesday and was back three nights later. On my second visit, I wanted more crab. This time, I tried their Crab Cocktail for my appetizer. I had a plate full of lump crab meat that was absolutely fantastic for $10.95. This appetizer in a restaurant on the Strip would have been at least $19.

For my main meal, I had to order some crab legs. Their crab legs are not only hot, but they are seasoned as well. I love the seasoning they use. It’s like being at the boardwalk on a beach with the Old Bay seasoning.

The crab legs were cooked just right as they were meaty and the crab itself pulled out easily, which is a result of perfect cooking. The cost is just $9.95 per half-pound order.

If you are looking for a fancy sit-down place, this isn’t it. But if you want great seafood at very reasonable prices, you’ll love it. I predict that as good as the food is here, it won’t be that long until they make that jump to their own stand-alone location. The food is that good.

When I said it was a Mom-and-Pop place, it’s more like the entire family as I met Sandy, her husband and her father. I talked about horses with her dad for 20 minutes.

They really do make you feel like family when you visit. I give The Sandy Crab 4 Forks.
