This week I found a great place to enjoy a sandwich for lunch. It is called Munch-A-Sub and it’s located at 5320 S. Cameron Street. Their menu says, “Best Kept Secret in Town.” Well, they aren’t kidding.

This sandwich shop has been here for 20 years and I didn’t know it. I have driven right by it hundreds of times. Driving home from the radio station after doing a show I was at the stop light at the corner of Hacienda and Cameron when I noticed a flag that said Subs. Out of curiosity I turned onto to Cameron and there was a little shop in a strip mall with some offices and storefronts. I was hungry so I decided to give it a try.

As you walk in you can smell the fresh bread they use for the sandwiches and the menu has all the sandwiches and subs you would expect to find in a New York Deli. On this visit I went with the No. 19, which is imported ham, Genoa salami, capicola and Provolone. It was garnished with lettuce, tomato, onion and their special seasoning.

If I’m going to try a new sub shop I’m going right to an Italian sub, and I can tell you I wasn’t disappointed. They have 6- and 12-inch sizes on all their subs. The 12-inch is just a $1 more, which makes it a no brainer, so that’s what I got along with a bag of chips and a drink. They do not skimp on the meat and, honestly, the 6-inch was more than enough for lunch as I ended up taking the other half home for later.

The bun was excellent. As I always say in my column, the bread can make or break a sandwich. In this case the bread just made it so much better.

Munch-A-Sub has both hot and cold subs. I enjoyed my lunch so much I had to come back a few days later to try something else. On this visit I went with their Meatball Sub. Just like my other sandwich Munch-A-Sub didn’t skimp as my roll was busting with meatballs. In fact, I had to actually go to my fork to finish it off, as there were so many meatballs it got a little messy toward the end.

Maybe giving the bun a light toasting would have helped it hold up to all those meatballs a little better but we still got the job done and enjoyed the sandwich.

On my next visit I want to try their Italian Sausage sub.

Each day they have several different soups, including Italian Wedding and Chili; they also offer some vegetarian dishes. You can also get sandwiches served as a wrap. They also make fresh egg, tuna, chicken and crab salad sandwiches.

If you are not feeling like a sandwich they have several hot pasta dishes all served with their meatballs, a side salad and bread.

Munch-A-Sub is open Monday thru Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m., and closed on weekends. They do serve breakfast until 10 a.m., offering an English muffin sandwich, a breakfast burrito and a breakfast BLT on your choice of bread or bagel. If you go right at lunch time the place gets busy, but the ladies have quite a system to get your order out quick. It really is quite impressive how they utilize the space and how quickly they get orders out.

The staff is extremely friendly and the subs were excellent. I give Munch-A-Sub a rating of 3.75 forks and just maybe after this article it won’t be such a secret anymore.
