SI Sportsbook Enters Growing Michigan Sports Betting Market

The SI Sportsbook will be the 16th to operate in Michigan. In 2022, sports betting has boomed in the state: in the first seven months of the year, the state has reported $2.17 billion in total handle and just over $5 million in tax revenue. Last year over the same period, those figures were $1.85 billion and $4.5 million.

Since Michigan launched legal online sports betting in 2021 (and including a short period of retail sports betting in 2020), the state has reported more than $6.9 billion in total handle. That means nearly $7 billion has been wagered on sports in the state. That makes Michigan one of only eight states to top $6 billion in total handle.

Through July 2022, sports betting operators in Michigan have recorded more than $535 million in revenue, which has produced $17.5 million in tax revenue. The state uses most of that tax revenue for the School Aid Fund, with other funds going to Michigan’s Compulsive Gaming Prevention Fund and the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund.

Large brands such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars have grabbed much of the market share in Michigan, and competition has been spirited. TwinSpires recently announced it would cease accepting wagers on its sports betting and casino apps in Michigan on Sept. 6. That brand consistently ranked among the lower tier of sports betting operators in total handle in the state.

SI Sportsbook arrives in a more mature, yet still expanding market in the state. Sports fans in Michigan have taken to legal sports wagering, especially popular has been the NFL and college football seasons, as well as NCAA’s March Madness college basketball tournament. The Detroit Lions open their season Sept. 8, and the Michigan Wolverines are the defending Big 10 football champions.

888Sport Brings SI Sportsbook to its Third State

Sports Illustrated is a well-known brand in the U.S., tracing its roots to 1954 when the color magazine debuted on newsstands. For nearly 70 years SI has brought amazing photography and exclusive feature writing to sports fans. In recent years, adjusting to market trends, Sports Illustrated has made some changes.

The magazine is now published biweekly, and the struggling company was purchased by Authentic Brands in 2019. In 2021, Authentic Brands sold the naming rights for an SI sports betting app to 888Sports, which operates in the U.S. as 888 Holdings. The debut of SI Sportsbook in Michigan marks the third state where 888Sport has launched, joining Colorado and New Jersey.
