How many times have you been meeting up with friends and were trying to decide on a place to eat? You know how hard it is to make everyone happy, especially if some people are trying to eat healthy and you just want to sink your teeth into a big burger.
Well, never fear, I have found the perfect solution to this problem. Check out SkinnyFats at 6261 Dean Martin Drive. The menu is simple as there are two sides – the Healthy Side and the Happy Side.
The healthy side is just that, good healthy choices to choose from, and they offer breakfast all day. SkinnyFats is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily except on Sundays, which is 10 a.m to 6 p.m.
I made two recent visits, once to explore the breakfast menu and then to try a burger. If you have read any of my past articles you know which side of the menu I was ordering from. I was exploring my options for breakfast on the happy side of the tracks.
I had my choice narrowed down to two – the REDiculous, which is a Red Velvet waffle with cream cheese frosting and berries, drizzled with chocolate and served with Applewood bacon or the Drunken Monkey Cakes, which is three pancakes, glazed bananas, whipped cream, marshmallows and chocolate served with Applewood bacon.
Talk about a tough decision so early in the day. Well, to be honest, I couldn’t make up my mind so I put the decision in the hands of my waitress. When she returned I told her my two choices and she replied, “I’m a drunken monkey kind of girl.”
Now how could I argue with my cute blonde waitress with that reply? Drunken Monkey it was and boy she was so right. There are a lot of great pancake places around town and I put these pancakes as one of my top 3 favorites.
On my second trip I went for lunch with my wife and she had to be all hip and order from the healthy side, going with a salad that she enjoyed. I was on a mission, wanting a burger.
Now if you want a burger and are looking for a healthy choice, I saw several people enjoying their Cranburkey, which is a turkey and cranberry patty with arugula, tomato, red onion and cranberry yogurt on a wheat bun.
The table I saw next to us was enjoying their Cranburkey very much, but me. I had a real burger on my mind and I went with the Classic – a ½ lb. patty, cheddar, tomato, onion, pickle, lettuce and SkinnyFat sauce on a brioche bun. I also went with the Truffle Fries.
My burger was cooked to the temperature I wanted, not automatically cooked to well done like too many places do. I like my burger juicy and this baby was just that. And, very tasty!
What’s cool about the menu is how they have something on the healthy side then directly across from it on the happy side the alter ego of the healthy version. For example, the healthy choice to my Drunken Money Pancakes was Pocket Jacks, which by the way in poker is one of my least favorite hands to play.
On this menu I won’t be playing them either since they are two protein pancakes with agave, bananas and turkey bacon.
All kidding aside, this is a great concept for a restaurant and it does give everyone a choice as to what they want to eat. I must say the concept has caught on as I have been here twice and the place was packed both times. They even offer the healthy and happy choices for drinks as you can order healthy juices and smoothies or good old fashion Shakes and Floats.
A fun place with a friendly staff and cozy atmosphere, I give SkinnyFats a rating of 3.5 Forks out of 4.
