If you’re an NFL fan visiting Las Vegas, let me introduce you to a couple of sportsbooks that are offering something on the 2017 season no one else is yet.

First up, I give you Michael Gaughan’s South Point on the far south end of the Strip with a sportsbook that posted the first season win totals in town. How many games will the Cleveland Browns win this season? South Point is saying 4.

It wasn’t so long ago season win totals were posted by most books in August while the preseason was being played, but in this competitive era of every book taking their brand to the next level, there is no need to wait and follow conformity. If having the talent within to offer sound numbers that will keep the sharp bettors from salivating too much, why not throw it on the board today rather than tomorrow.

That’s the same methodology CG Technology has employed at its books located at the Venetian, Palazzo, The Palms, Cosmopolitan, Tropicana, Hard Rock and Silverton. It only took them a week following the NFL releasing the 2017 schedule to post a spread on every game schedule for Weeks 1-16.

The great thing about betting these games now is if you’ve forecasted a team to excel better than the book has them rated, you can take the value in all their games. For most who bet the games now for the limit, they’re just playing the value of their own personal rating against the books’.

Of course, a large portion of people wagering are just doing so because they won’t be back in town. There are also those who are simply excited about seeing so many NFL options available in April and can’t resist.

Patriots at 11.5 wins

The number that got a lot of immediate attention at the South Point was the New England season win total, initially set at 11 and bet up to 11.5. It was the highest total posted among all 32 teams with the Steelers and Seahawks opening at 10.5. The wagers on Patriots/Over are quite understandable since New England has had 14 straight double-digit win seasons. In 12 of those, they won at least 11 games and they’ve taken 12 or more in each of the past seven seasons.

Those types of numbers make a great case for betting the Patriots/Over again. It seems like every year when we try to make an excuse why they won’t win the AFC East it’s paired with some wild plan happening like the Jets or Bills being better.

This year’s plan is what? Brady is satisfied with sticking it to Goodell and now his passion and drive will be lessened? The history alone of Bill Belichick’s program should be enough to derail any notion of betting against the Patriots.

Even in 2008 when Brady missed the entire season, Belichick was able get 11 wins with backup Matt Cassel.

The Draft

Westgate SuperBook VP Jay Kornegay said his first experience with offering NFL Draft props last week went better than expected with betting action. I love it and can’t wait to see how the books expand upon it next year.

Derby Day

One of my favorite strolls through Las Vegas happens on the first Saturday in May when every racebook in town takes center stage for the Kentucky Derby. It’s a sign that horse racing is still very much alive despite signs pointing otherwise as this new generation of bettors get filtered in.

Those that attend the Derby Day in Las Vegas, who don’t bet horses regularly, probably are like me in the sense of wanting to relive some of that nostalgia from our younger days when horse racing was revered.

So I’m going get dressed up in a nice spring gentleman’s suit – makes me feel like I’m hanging with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, get my Forms, a mint julep and try my luck at all kinds of propositions.

To help me get pointed in the right direction, I always listen to what Richard Eng has to say and he’ll be at the Westgate SuperBook on Friday giving away free Derby information during a seminar hosted by Brian Blessing.

There’s nothing wrong with getting something for free and several books will be giving away commemorative T-shirts or glasses. Each year the racebook budgets $1,000 to $5,000, depending on their size and cash wagered, and offers it back to the people as some type of enticement to visit. The books keep about 18 percent of all pari-mutuel handle so it’s to their benefit to get as much handle as possible. Free trinkets always seem to work.

Station Casinos racebooks are giving away official Kentucky Derby t-shirts with a $25 wager on the Derby. They’re also boosting their Twin Quinella to a guaranteed $10,000 on Friday and a guaranteed $20,000 on Saturday. Free stuff is out there, so go get it.
