The Dallas Stars will look to snap its losing streak in the nation’s capital tonight as they take on the Washington Capitals. This should be a tremendous game to begin an NHL on ESPN doubleheader, and we are here to break down the Stars vs. Capitals odds, picks, and predictions.
While they still hold one of the league’s best records, Dallas has lost five of its last seven games and has fallen behind the Colorado Avalanche in the Central. Meanwhile, the Capitals are 12-8-2 on the year but are also stuck in a rut, losing four of its last six.
If you need help picking a side for this matchup, we have got you covered as we preview this game and give our best Stars vs. Capitals betting pick.

Dallas Stars (14-7-3, 10-14 ATS)
Not only are the Stars struggling on the ice, but they will be playing with tired legs tonight. This will be their third road game in the last four days, and Dallas is coming off a road loss to the Panthers last night.
Luckily, they still have one of the best offenses in the NHL. Over the last seven games, they have averaged 3.14 goals per game, which is not too far off from their season average. The Stars rank eighth in goals per game (3.42), and they do that on only 29.8 shots per game.
They have a lot of scoring depth on the roster, including Joe Pavelski, Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson, and Mason Marchment. However, they likely will be without Tyler Seguin, as he left last night’s game with an injury. Even without him, there are many other options for the Stars to lean on.
While they score a lot, the play between the pipes has not been great. Jake Oettinger is solid but wildly inconsistent, as evidenced by his performance last night, allowing five goals in a loss to Florida. Tonight, the Stars will turn to Scott Wedgewood, who is allowing 3.2 goals per game.
Although Washington has scored the least amount of goals this season, there is not a lot of confidence in Wedgewood, who has allowed seven goals in his last two starts.
Dallas Stars Betting Trends
- The total has gone OVER in eight of Dallas’ last 11 games.
- Dallas is 15-5 SU in its last 20 games against Washington.
- Dallas is 10-1 SU in its last 11 games in Washington.
Washington Capitals (12-8-2, 8-14 ATS)
A deeper look into the Capitals season unveils some significant problems. Not only are they the worst offense in the league, but the play from both goalies has not been great. Darcy Kuemper allows 3.23 goals per game and 15 goals in his last five starts.
There is no word on if they will go with Kuemper or Charlie Lindgren tonight. No matter who they pick, they will have their hands full against a high-powered Dallas offense. The Capitals allow over 30 shots per game, and the Stars have a lot of goal-scorers up and down the roster.
Somehow, Washington will need more production outside Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson. Outside of those two, they are not scoring much, and their xGoal% ranks toward the bottom of the league, signaling that this offense just does not score or put themselves in opportunities to score.
The Stars are vulnerable in this spot, but it is hard to ignore how bad the Capitals have been at scoring the puck. Over the last six games, Washington has only scored nine goals.
Washington Capitals Betting Trends
- The total has gone UNDER in 11 of Washington’s last 16 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in five of Washington’s last five games against Dallas.
- The total has gone UNDER in nine of Washington’s last 12 home games.
Stars vs. Capitals Prediction: Low Scoring Night in the Nation’s Capital
There is nothing else to say about Washington’s offensive production other than it stinks. Not only are they simply not scoring goals, but they also rank at the bottom in expected goals for, meaning they are not just unlucky but that the offense is inept.
While Dallas is in a tough spot coming off a road loss last night, there is way too much firepower to back the Capitals to win the game. The Stars are playing its third game in four nights, all of which have come on the road.
Although Dallas struggles on back-to-backs, the goalie play is also much more robust, and if anyone is playing worse hockey at this current moment than the Stars, it is tonight’s opponent.
The Stars should come out with a win over a Capitals team that simply is not putting the puck in the net right now, but do not expect a lot of scoring tonight and for this game to go under the total.
