The Pittsburgh Steelers are scheduled to play the Miami Dolphins on the road in a Sunday Night Football matchup in Week 7 of the 2022 NFL season.

The line opened last week with the Dolphins as a 4-point favorite. The number has since ballooned to 7 across the board at the DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and PointsBet betting sites.

Steelers-Dolphins Features Tua Tagovailoa’s Expected Return

Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was knocked unconscious early in the Dolphins’ 27-15 Thursday night road loss to Cincinnati three weeks ago, is scheduled to make his return to the huddle this week for rookie head coach Mike McDaniel. Tagovailoa had been in concussion protocol.

For Pittsburgh, the quarterback situation is unclear. Rookie Kenny Pickett, in his second start last week against Tampa Bay, also suffered a concussion and was replaced by Mitch Trubisky. Although Pickett was able to practice this week, he hasn’t yet been cleared to play Sunday.

Coach Mike Tomlin said that if Pickett gets the thumbs up, he’ll start.

The Dolphins, one of just two teams to open the season at 3-0 (also Philadelphia), have dropped three straight since Tagovailoa’s injury behind backups Teddy Bridgewater and Skylar Thompson, who also have been knocked out of games.

But Miami (3-3 against the spread) deserved better in last week’s 24-16 home loss to NFC North leader Minnesota. The Dolphins held the Vikings to only 234 yards, 11 first downs, and forced 10 3-and-outs. Miami’s downfall was in large part the result of a -3 turnover differential (Bridgewater had two INTs in relief of Thompson) and 77 more penalty yards than Minnesota.

Pittsburgh (2-4 SU/2-3-1 ATS), meanwhile, overcame the loss of Pickett and beat the visiting Bucs 20-18 as a 9.5-point underdog, the biggest point-spread upset of the season. That snapped the Steelers’ four-game losing streak, which matched its longest in the past 13 seasons under Tomlin.

Trubisky, who was the Steelers’ starter the first four weeks, certainly wasn’t a downgrade after Pickett departed, going 9-for-12 for 144 yards and a passer rating of 142.4 — his best such number in a game the past four years. And it came against a team that has the league’s 11th-best defensive passer rating. Miami is 29th on that chart.

An interesting wrinkle in this game is that Brian Flores, who was head coach of the Dolphins the previous three years and was fired after two straight winning seasons,  is Pittsburgh’s linebackers coach. Still bitter about that ouster, he could well pass along to his guys tips about Tagovailoa’s vulnerabilities and the Dolphins’ other perceived shortcomings.

Steelers vs. Dolphins SNF Prediction

The spread seems enormous considering the Dolphins have admitted that they will be encouraging Tagovailoa to put his safety well ahead of going for the extra yard. And who could blame Tua if in the face of the pass rush he throws the ball away early on occasion or hits the deck before taking a hit? And his scrambling surely will be cut back.

Miami’s offense also might not have a couple of key performers at full-go, with second-leading receiver Jaylen Waddle (shoulder) being limited in midweek drills. Leading rusher Raheem Mostert (knee) also was limited. Even with him, Miami ranked 30th in rushing yards. Without him, yikes!

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, gets back two-time All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who sat out last week’s game with a knee injury. He said he feels good now.

And with the temperature at kickoff likely to be only in the 70s, there’s little risk of the Steelers fading because of the heat and humidity. None in fact.

Prediction: Steelers 23, Dolphins 20
