Midway through the first week of buildup to Super Bowl 57, gamblers have settled comfortably on the Philadelphia Eagles as a slight -1.5 favorite over the Kansas City Chiefs, and the over/under sitting between 49.5 and 50 across US sportsbooks.

At DraftKings, bettors back the Eagles with 70% spread handle, while 55% handle supporting the Over suggests the books have that number right about where people think the total falls.

As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings and Caesars are among the books dealing an over/under of 50, while BetMGM and BetRivers remain at 49.5.

As the early line movement has tilted toward Philadelphia, that line may be locked in for a while. This opens the financial floodgates for an abundant prop-betting menu, which went up faster than any previous year of legalized sports betting.

DraftKings Sees Heavy Early Betting Action

All told, gamblers raced to find their best positions on the spread and have time to tinker with it and add the side bets.

“You started with the opening number of Philadelphia +1 on Sunday night and Philadelphia bettors jumped on that,” Johnny Avello, the director of race and sportsbook operations for DraftKings, told Gaming Today. “We got immediate action, and I’m not talking about five or 10 dimes here. Players were weighing in at $50-100,000 a pop on that first line, which we then moved. Action was heavy with the props too.

“With those wagers, people are betting on teams and players that have been making them money all year long.”

Avello said gamblers lined up for Travis Kelce and Jalen Hurts to score the first touchdown, both at +700. Miles Sanders, who turned the trick against the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday, leads the pack at +650.

Kelce returned +700 in notching the first score of Kansas City’s 23-20 triumph over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hurts did not score first in Philadelphia’s 31-7 triumph over the San Francisco 49ers, although he has several times this year. He nonetheless found the end zone at -105 for an anytime score.

“You can almost see where the people are going to go,” Avello noted. “It seems like these players score every game.”

Chiefs vs. Eagles Moneyline Action Slow

Avello added that the perceived parity of the game restricts moneyline action because the price isn’t generally attractive. At DraftKings, Philadelphia was -125 and Kansas City +105 on Wednesday morning.

That prompts more players to seek spread betting for enhanced value, especially on favorites.

But it’s not scintillating, at -110 on both sides.

“If this game was, say, 7, and you think the team is strong but may not cover the spread, you night lay the -280 moneyline,” Avello said. “On the flip side, if you think a dog is going to win outright when it’s +7, you might want to take that +260 and take a shot to get a nice payout.”

Legal Sports Betting Will Drive Super Bowl Handle

Welcome to the new multiplier.

Avello cited two factors that could drive the Big Game handle to record numbers.

The spread of legal sports betting presents a Super Bowl milestone in the post-PASPA era. This betting logistic was not possible when the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots met in the 2019 Super Bowl.

Nor could it apply when the 49ers met the Chiefs in 2020, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers opposed Kansas City in 2021 or when the Rams and Bengals tangled last year.

What’s the elusive ingredient?

“This will be the first Super Bowl in which a team that’s playing is actually in a state where betting is legal,” Avello said.

“This covers both teams. Pennsylvania is a huge market, and the Eagles are a popular team. Kansas also has betting, and the Chiefs are in. I’m looking for that to be a major factor driving the betting higher than people already expect (even though Kansas City is in Missouri).”

Avello also noted this is also the first time the host site resides in a legal betting state. Georgia, Florida (twice), and California stadiums hosted the four previous Super Bowls played since the repeal of PASPA. None had the luxury of taking legalized bets.

That changes with this game in Glendale, Ariz.

Arizona not only has legalized gambling but is accessible from nearby California, encouraging bettors from major markets throughout southern California to cross over, establish accounts in state, and wager.

Books value this multiplier effect on a game that already appeals beyond the betting public.

“For some players, it will be their first bet ever,” he said. “For some other people, it will the one game each year that they bet. And for a lot of gamblers, it’s the game they are going to put more money on because it’s the big one. That’s why the betting on this game is always tremendous.”

Props Roundup

It’s side-bet nirvana.

Bettors love the game outside the game, and the prop-bet menu continues to grow.

Here’s a roundup at some of the major books.

Kelce tops the list at +215, which is only an average price. Many others have significant value if they score and their team triumphs. That’s a good list to check.

Novelty Props

  • Will there be a walk-off, game-winning field goal? Yes is +750
  • Kickoff returns Over 4.5 +125

You want Philly Philly?

Well, the Eagles are back in the Super Bowl, where they scored on a TD pass to quarterback Nick Foles at the end of the first half in 2018. Well, a non-quarterback to throw a touchdown pass here is +2200.

Devin Hester ‘You are Ridiculous’ Prop

The opening kickoff to be returned for a touchdown is +10000. An anytime kickoff-return score is +3000.

Hester is the only player ever to return the Super Bowl opening kickoff for a touchdown. He did it in 2007 for the Chicago Bears against the Indianapolis Colts.

The kickoff returner was so prolific that an announcer often said “Devin Hester, You Are Ridiculous” after he ran one in for a score.

FanDuel Props

Here’s a sampling from FanDuel Sportsbook:

  • Mahomes, McKinnon and Pacheco to reach 100 yards combined +100

Squares

This is an interesting section resembling all the box pools gamblers have played for years. It’s the last digit of each team’s final score.

You can check out the whole section. Anything that hits will pay well.

  • Kansas City 7 and Philadelphia 0, for instance, pays +2000
  • Kansas City 3 and Philadelphia 0 is +2400

Flip that to Philadelphia 3 and Kansas City 0 for +2500. Or play them both and take a profit of +1200 or +1250.

We mention this number because that was the winning total last year, when the Rams topped the Bengals 23-20.
