With the upstart Cincinnati Bengals set to face the L.A. Rams on February 13 at SoFi Stadium, let’s look back at Super Bowl odds history to see if we can glean some trends for bettors to ponder.

Recent Super Bowl history favors the Bengals. Underdogs getting more than four points have won outright on four straight occasions, and they’ve covered the spread in six straight Super Bowls. Most recently, in Super Bowl 52, Philadelphia defeated New England 41-33 as a 4.5-point dog.

When betting opened on Super Bowl 56 as the Rams were wrapping up their 20-17 win over the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, L.A. was as cheap as a 3.5-point favorite over the Bengals, who had beaten the Chiefs 27-24 a few hours earlier for the AFC title. The line move to a betting market consensus of Rams -4 later Sunday night, and it didn’t take long for the spread to reach -4.5, where it sits on most oddsboards as of this Wednesday post.

Before the Eagles’ outright win over the Patriots, the Broncos (+4.5) beat the Panthers in Super Bowl 50, the Ravens (+4.5) got past the 49ers in Super Bowl 47, and the Saints (+5) prevailed over the Colts in Super Bowl 44.

In the two Super Bowl prior to New Orleans-Indianapolis, the underdog Cardinals (+7 vs. the Steelers) and Giants (+12 vs. the Patriots) both covered the spread, although Arizona lost the game outright, while New York pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.

The Bengals have covered seven consecutive games entering Super Bowl 56. Cincinnati opened the season 150-to-1 to win the Super Bowl. The Bengals will match the ’99 St. Louis Rams as the longest shot to win it all if they can beat L.A. on its home field.

The Bengals are +168 on the moneyline at FanDuel, but the sportsbook is offering new customers a special offer: Bet $5 on either the Rams or Bengals to win Super Bowl 56 at +5600 (56-to-1 odds) for a potential payout of $280 at FanDuel Louisana.

Super Bowl Betting Trends

Over the 55 Super Bowls so far, favorites have covered 28 times, underdogs 25, and two games have pushed. But many of those chalk cashes came early in Super Bowl history, as favorites covered in 11 of the first 14 and 15 of the first 21 Super Bowls. Underdogs went on an 10-3 ATS run from Super Bowl 36 though 48.

Three straight Super Bowls have stayed ‘under’, but there’s a dead-even split of 47-47 on over/unders in Super Bowl history. There was no total posted for Super Bowl I.

We caution, though, these trends are from small sample sizes and should not be the prevailing factor of your wagering decisions.
