Could the Cleveland Browns be a Super Bowl Cinderella story in the making? It’s certainly possible.

The Browns entered the 2023-24 season with okay prospects for a postseason run. The team’s odds hovered in the +3500 zone at top sports betting apps. They are far from the top contenders, but not out of the picture.

Now, things are looking good for Cleveland despite a harried season. The Browns find themselves in the Wild Card Round against the Houston Texans, and a win would advance them to the Divisional Round.

It’s been an unlikely but captivating season for the Browns, who now enter the playoffs with a chance to win it all in the latest Super Bowl odds.

The Story So Far: The Dominoes Fall

The Browns started the 2023-24 season with a bit of back-and-forth. A Week 1 win against the rival Cincinnati Bengals kicked things off, followed by a four-point loss to the Steelers, who would also make the playoffs.

Another flip-flop came in weeks 3 and 4. A win against the Titans (holding Tenessee to one field goal just like the Browns did to the Bengals two weeks prior) and a loss to the Ravens.

Cleveland’s defeat at the hands of the Ravens wasn’t the only hit the team took. When the Browns were gearing up for Week 5, one of the squad’s power players suffered season-ending injuries. Star running back Nick Chubb, a core component of the Browns’s offense, went down in the game against the Steelers. He would later undergo knee surgery to repair the damage, sidelining him until the 2024-25 season.

Later in the season, in another bout with Baltimore, quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a fracture in his shoulder that required surgery to repair. Though he would recover fully, the Browns were left without their speediest asset in Nick Chubb and their unifying force behind center in Deshaun Watson.

From One Backup Quarterback to the Next

Backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson stepped in after Watson’s injury, leading the Browns to a three-point win over the Steelers and suffering a loss to the Denver Broncos. Thompson-Robinson suffered a concussion, and then things got even more interesting.

Enter Joe Flacco, former star quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens and, more recently, member of the New York Jets. The Browns snagged Joe Flacco, putting him on the practice squad and elevating him to starting QB on December 3 against the Rams. The Browns entered this game with a 7-5 record and would lose to the Rams, but Flacco threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns.

The next four games were smooth sailing. Flacco helmed the team like a true veteran, notching wins against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, and Flacco’s former team, the New York Jets. The final regular season game pitted the Browns against the Bengals, but Cleveland lost 31-14.

Emerging as the glue that would hold the Browns together, Flacco led the team to a playoff berth. Now, there’s a very real chance the Browns could make the Super Bowl for the franchise’s first time (and possibly win).

Cleveland Browns vs. Houston Texans Meet In The Wild Card Round

The Browns’s first obstacle is a feisty Houston Texans team helmed by rookie QB CJ Stroud. Neither franchise has ever made a Super Bowl appearance, and both will look to defy expectations and trounce their way to the big game.

Expect the game to be a tight race. The Browns last met the Texans on Christmas Eve, where Cleveland soared to a 36-22 win. Flacco threw for a whopping 368 yards and three touchdowns. Stroud wasn’t playing for the Texans during the game; he was benched for two weeks with a concussion.

That makes this game’s narrative all the more spicy. Flacco and the Browns will fight to knock out another win against the Texans, while Houston—with its starting QB back in action—will seek that sweet advancement to the next round.

Flacco is no stranger to playoff football. He led the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl win against the San Francisco 49ers following the 2012-13 season. He played in multiple AFC Championships, too. Could his calm under pressure lead to an easy win over the Texans and their green QB? Time will tell.
