This week I ventured out to try something totally different as we went to The Boiling Crab (4001 S. Decatur Blvd.).

If you love crab, shrimp and lobster this place is for you but be prepared to get messy. The Boiling Crab concept is simple. First you decide what exactly you want to eat.

They have four different kinds of crab to choose from – Blue, Dungeness, Snow and King. I went with King.

Next you have to decide what flavoring you want with your crab. You can order Rajun Cajun, Lemon Pepper, Garlic or what they call The Whole Sha-Bang. The Whole Sha-Bang is a mixture of all three.

With the advice of my server I went with the Whole Sha-Bang. You’re not done yet as you have to pick your spice level. You can go Plain n Simple, Mild, Medium or XXX. Being soft I went with just plain and simple for my spice level.

The fun part begins in a few minutes when your waiter comes back to your table carrying a big plastic bag. In that bag is going to be your meal in all its glory sitting in the flavor juice you ordered all hot and steamy. Put that bib on they gave you when you sat down as you’re going to need it.

You dive into your personal bagged meal and pull out a crab leg and start the process of getting that sweet crab meat out that is infused with the flavoring you ordered. The Crab is so sweet and tasty as it was boiled right with the flavor you ordered.

You can also order corn on the cob and have the corn tossed in the bag to cook right with the crab. This is the way I went. The corn was so good I wish I had ordered a few more ears. In addition to having crab this way you can also order lobster, crawfish, shrimp and clams.

Messy comes with eating this meal with your hands but that’s part of the appeal. When I was here, which was a Sunday night around 6, the place was packed and I saw so many families with the kids just having a blast eating their meals.

The Boiling Crab is a large restaurant but there was a wait when I got there and a bigger wait as I was leaving. This place is very popular and for good reason. If you want to catch a game while you are eating your crab legs you are covered as there are TV’s everywhere, so I was enjoying Sunday Night Football and downing a lot of crab.

If you prefer fried foods they also have Fried Baskets featuring catfish, shrimp, chicken tenders, calamari and fried oysters. The baskets also include Cajun fries.

My meal was great and the wait staff was very attentive. If you are in the mood for some crab and don’t mind getting down and dirty, I highly recommend The Boiling Crab. I give it a rating of 3.75 Forks.
