There’s a 100% chance that if you’re reading this article, you’re aware that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and global icon Taylor Swift are dating one another. There’s also a chance that you’re a football purist who takes your NFL straight, no romantic chasers.
We hear you.
But one thing that differentiates the Kelce-Swift storyline from one like Russell Wilson and Ciara’s or even Tom Brady and Giselle’s (remember those days) is that Taylor Swift’s presence at boyfriend Travis’ games actually impacts sports betting markets.
So if you’re backing Kelce & Co. because of Taylor, you might want to read this first. Here is the Taylor Swift effect on Travis Kelce player props.
Kelce the Commodity
Since the two have become one, Kelce’s Instagram follower count has increased by the millions, his jersey sales are up some 400%, and he’s become a hot commodity for bettors looking to get in on individual player props.
“There’s more Kelce betting, that’s for sure,” FanDuel CEO Amy Howe said in October. “Just when you think [Swift] couldn’t conquer anything else, she conquers the sports world, too.”
DraftKings also reported a huge uptick in Kelce prop betting — especially earlier in the season — and that was directly related to Taylor Swift and her presence at Chiefs games.
When KC faced the Jets in Week 4, DK revealed that bettors wagered more than twice the amount of cash on Kelce props for that game than they had in the previous two weeks combined.
Backing Taylor-era Kelce is certainly a fun bet. Let’s look at if it’s actually a good one.
What happens when Taylor is present in Chiefs Kingdom?
Well, when their love was young and new (to us) in NFL Weeks 3 and 4, the veteran TE had solid games in which he had seven catches for 69 yards and then six catches for 60 yards, respectively.
But then things really heated up.
In Weeks 6 and 7 as T. Swift looked on from the box, Kelce racked up 124 and 179 receiving yards. In Kansas City’s Week 6, 19-8 win over Denver, Patrick Mahomes’ favorite target had nine catches. His Over/Under for receptions in that game was 6.5.
In the team’s Week 7, 31-17 win over the Chargers, Kelce’s season-high of 179 helped cash winning tickets for bettors who backed his Over 74.5 receiving yards in that game.
The “Back to December” songstress was watching in person for Weeks 13 and 14, too. At DraftKings in Week 13, odds for Kelce Anytime Touchdown Scorer were +100. Unfortunately, he finished that contest with no TDs as his squad fell 27-19 to the Packers.
Kelce also failed to score in the Chiefs’ 20-17 Week 14 loss to Buffalo, but his 83 receiving yards did eclipse the O/U of 69.5.
Based on what we know about Kelce’s player reputation as Swift’s love interest, should bettors go big on No. 87 when his sweetheart is in the building? It is fun, after all, to sprinkle some money on Kelce props and then wish upon a pop star that Swift’s presence motivates him to play lights out.
However, here’s the reality. The Chiefs’ offense as a whole has regressed and that unit does not look nearly as formidable as it looked even as recently as this time last year.
So before you back Travis Kelce to have big games in which he exceeds his receiving yards, catches, and touchdown props, consider the big picture. And that big picture says KC’s performance as a whole lately leaves much to be desired — and that’s regardless of whether Taylor Swift is there to watch or not.
