UFC 297 Betting Preview: Strickland vs. Du Plessis

A year ago, most wouldn’t have thought that Sean Strickland (28-5 MMA, 15-5 UFC) would be the middleweight champion heading into 2024, but here we are.

The champ had an impressive and dominating performance against Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 back in September to cap off a current three-fight win streak.

The wins over Nassourdine Imavov and Abusupiyan Magomedov came after a devastating knockout loss to former Middleweight Champion and current Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira. He also lost a close decision to Jared Cannonier.

The losses ended Strickland’s previous six-fight win streak that had him moving up the middleweight rankings.

Strickland also has career wins over Brendan Allen, Jack Hermansson, and Uriah Hall.

Now Strickland takes on Dricus Du Plessis (20-2 MMA, 6-0 UFC). Joining the UFC in late 2020, Du Plessis has wins over Robert Whittaker, Derek Brunson, Darren Till, and Brad Tavares.

The UFC planned to have Du Plessis fight Adesanya when Izzy still held the belt. The promotion activities were already happening, including having Izzy come into the octagon after Du Plessis’ win over Whittaker. But the deal wasn’t made and Adesanya ended up fighting Strickland and losing.

However, this is an intriguing matchup. Strickland is a point fighter who knows how to keep his distance and frustrate his opponents. Du Plessis is a strong force on the ground and has finished five of his six UFC bouts by KO or TKO.

This could be a great fight that goes multiple rounds or it could be a fight where Strickland gets caught like he did against Pereira and we have a new champion again.

But what’s next for whoever wins on Saturday night? Adesanya getting a chance to win the belt back against Strickland or Du Plessis makes perfect sense and is the most predictable choice.
