UFC 298 Betting Preview: Volkanovski vs. Topuria

Alexander Volkanovski (26-3 MMA, 13-2) is arguably the greatest UFC featherweight of all time. But, is it coming to an end?

Many MMA fans have expressed their worry online after his KO loss to Makhachev in Abu Dhabi last year.

But Volkanovski is the champion for a reason. He’s 13-0 in the UFC featherweight division with wins over Max Holloway, Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes, Yair Rodriguez, Brian Ortega, and Chan Sung Jung.

His biggest trait is his heart for the sport. He is someone who knows how to work an opponent on the feet, find a way to grind them down on the mat, and pull off wins.

Fans are quick to forget that the first matchup between Volk and Makhachev went five rounds and ended with Volk being on top, reigning down punches.

His only two UFC losses have come from Makhachev. Nobody else has really come close to beating the featherweight champ except Ortega for a few seconds when it seemed he had Volk in a tight guillotine choke.

But Ilia Topuria (14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) might be his biggest challenge at 145 pounds yet.

The rapidly rising contender just entered the UFC in late 2020. He has tallied wins over Josh Emmett, Bryce Mitchell, Jai Herbert, Ryan Hall, and Damon Jackson.

Four of his six UFC wins have come by finish.

These two fighters in one cage should be a great fight for the fans. Whether it stays standing, goes to the ground, or is a legitimate mixed martial arts match including both, it will be a treat on the fairly full card.

It will be tough to say what’s next for Volkanovski if he wins the bout. Could it be a fight against Josh Emmett or Movsar Evloev? There are not many names left for Volk at 145.

If Topuria wins, that’s a different story. There would of course be a rematch with Volk first, but if Topuria could beat him twice, that would open up the market for everyone again.
