Two UFC Featherweights will face off in Florida this weekend.

Former interim title contender Josh Emmett will take on the fast-rising Ilia Topuria in what should be a showcase of who has just a little bit more of that dog in them.

UFC Fight Night Odds: Emmett vs. Topuria

This week’s main event is not quite the pick ‘em that last week was predicted to be. To be honest, last week’s main event was not the pick ‘em it was supposed to be either. Sorry, Marvin Vettori.

Topuria is a moderate favorite at -330 on the moneyline in most sportsbooks, making Emmett a +275 underdog.

Emmett Hopes to Rebound After Interim Title Loss

Josh Emmett (18-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) isn’t ready to be counted out yet.

The 38-year-old has one more shot at best to get back into title contention and a win over Topuria is super necessary to do so.

It feels like the greater MMA community has pushed Emmett to the side after his interim title loss to Yair Rodriguez back at UFC 284, which is fair. It was an exciting night. Mexico got another belt and actual Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski showed his worth and gained loads of respect in his attempt to take the lightweight belt from Islam Makhachev.

But Emmett deserves the MMA community’s respect too. He’s been grinding out tough wins over the past few years, hitting a five-fight win streak before his interim title shot.

He won decisions against Calvin Kattar, Dan Ige, and Shane Burgos. And he knocked out Mirsad Bektic and Michael Johnson.

The stand-up skills of Emmett are solid, but his grappling is underrated. Emmett is a blue belt in jiu-jitsu and has wrestled since he was a kid. He will need to bring his entire arsenal to the table after getting subbed by Rodriguez like he did, because we all know Topuria will look at doing the same thing.

Topuria Looks to Keep the Wins Coming

Ilia Topuria (13-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) is the one to watch in the UFC’s featherweight division.

So far, the Georgian fighter hasn’t struggled once in the top promotion in the world.

He has proven he is dangerous on the feet, knocking out the likes of Ryan Hall, Damon Jackson, and Jai Herbert.

He ran through and submitted Bryce Mitchell, who is known for having a strong ground game.

But Emmett is a true test for the undefeated 26-year-old. Can he hang with title contenders and become one himself?

A win here doesn’t guarantee a title shot, but depending on if Topuria can get an impressive finish, it might.

The featherweight division is a weird one. Realistically, there’s tons of new blood for the champ Volkanovski if he beats Rodriguez.

However, the UFC keeps trying to run them through Max Holloway first and he pummels the crap out of them through five rounds so in essence, Holloway has become this inconvenient roadblock for the division since a fourth fight with Volk has to be out of the cards, right?

Luckily, Holloway is set to fight Chan Sung Jung next and the two vets can step out of the way for younger contenders to step up.

A win for Emmett probably means a fight against Arnold Allen in the near future after Allen’s loss to Holloway. But a win for Topuria could also mean a fight against Allen. It really depends on what Volkanovski does in his next bout.

But it’s interesting times in the featherweight division for sure.
