Holloway Hopes to Make It Two-In-A-Row

It’s crazy to think about what the featherweight division would be like if Alexander Volkanovski didn’t exist.

Max Holloway (24-7 MMA, 20-7 UFC) would probably be on a win streak of half a dozen fights or more, still defending his featherweight belt.

Over the past few years, he’s been taking on up-and-coming challengers before Volk can touch them and has been demolishing them on the feet: Calvin Kattar, Yair Rodriguez, and most recently, Arnold Allen. To be honest, it has put a damper on some of the title fights outside of Volkanovski vs. Makhachev of course.

The UFC tried really hard to make Holloway and Volk rivals. I mean, they did a whole trilogy. But to the UFC’s horror, Volk went 3-0 and won all the bouts by decision. When we look back on combat sports trilogies, that will not be one of the top ones.

But Holloway is a must-watch on his own. He’s a fighter’s fighter who doesn’t mind going toe-to-toe with anybody. He’s not afraid to take a hit to deliver three or four of his own.

And before his attempt at the lightweight belt against Dustin Poirier, Holloway strung together a 13-fight win streak.

People also tend to forget that even though Holloway has been in the UFC for 11 years now, he is only 31.

His resume includes wins over Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, Charles Oliveira, Cub Swanson, Jeremy Stephens, Frankie Edgar, and the others previously mentioned.

His losses only include Alexander Volkanovski (3x), Dustin Poirier (2x), Conor McGregor, and Dennis Bermudez.

The match-up with Chan Sung Jung here actually makes a lot of sense for both guys. It gives The Korean Zombie another crack at a top guy and it gives Holloway a fellow veteran and prevents him from clogging up the division by taking down another prospect before Volk can get to him.

The Korean Zombie Looks to Rise From the Dead

Chan Sung Jung (17-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) has had quite a long and short career all at the same time.

The South Korean lost two years of his prime due to mandatory military service in his home country, but in his 11 UFC fights over 11 years, he has had two title shots.

He is an impressive mixed martial artist and a pioneer of Korean MMA. Because of his influence and star power in South Korea, enthusiasm for the sport has grown in a country loyal to Tae Kwon Do.

Without Chan Sung Jung, there are no Road to the UFC events in the Eastern Asian region. His impact will always be underrated and unmeasured.

Though still considered a UFC veteran, his resume is a little shorter than Holloway’s. But the 36-year-old’s UFC debut was a historic one. He pulled off the first ‘twister’ submission in UFC history. Since then, there have only been a couple of others, including earlier this year.

He also has wins over Dustin Poirier, Mark Hominick, Frankie Edgar, Dan Ige, and Dennis Bermudez.

His losses include Volkanovski, Ortega, Rodriguez, and Aldo.

Who knows what is next for Chan Sung Jung after this? A win may spark the desire to keep going. But, he almost retired after his loss to Volk and another loss here may put the nail in the coffin for the Zombie after all.

UFC Singapore: Holloway vs. The Korean Zombie Prediction

Holloway has been getting decision after decision whether he wins or loses, but it’s about time for a finish and Chan Sung Jung may be the guy to get it from. The Korean Zombie is coming off a TKO loss to Volkanovski and Holloway’s striking output is exponentially higher than that of Volk’s on average. Holloway should overwhelm Chan Sung Jung and deliver the finish by KO/TKO.

Prediction: Max Holloway to win by KO/TKO at -125
