The UFC matchmakers tried pitting No. 5 Alexa Grasso and No. 6 Viviane “Vivi” Araujo against one another in two previously scheduled bouts, though both fights fell through. Well, third time’s a charm, because the two talented flyweights are set to face off in the main event of UFC Vegas 62 this Saturday, October 15.

A lot is at stake for these two female flyweights, as well as for the other fighters on the card, so let’s break down odds and props for UFC Vegas 62.

Grasso and Araujo are both the only two top six-ranked 125-pounders who have yet to challenge current champ Valentina Shevchenko for the strap. Therefore, whoever gets her hand raised at the end of this main event bout will almost certainly earn a shot at the title some time in early 2023.

UFC Vegas 62 Main Event Odds: Grasso vs. Araujo

Grasso opened just inside –200 to win outright in early wagering, but has seen her odds shorten to as low as -230 at BetRivers. Grasso supporters can now find the Mexican fighter’s best odds at -215 at FanDuel as of this midweek post.

Araujo opened at as short as +150, but bettors can now grab her at +185 at DraftKings.

The event’s headliner is a clash between two opposing fighting styles. Grasso, a striker, against the grappler Araujo are well-seasoned in their respective styles. With the bout’s total rounds set at 4.5, it may be a while until we can find out which martial art prevails.

In the co-main event, bantamweight Cub Swanson (odd between +160 and +185) faces Jonathan Martinez (between -200 and -225). Also on the card is a star-powered matchup between ranked flyweights Askar Askarov (between -240 and -250) and Brandon Royval (between +190 and +200).

The fight with the tightest odds is a middleweight bout between Nick Maximov (between –130 and –146) and Jacob Malkoun (between +112 and +115). The largest underdog on the card is welterweight Mike Jackson (between +450 and +530), who battles Pete Rodriguez (between –650 and –730) in the very first match of the event.

Grasso vs. Araujo Betting Preview

Streaking Grasso Looks to Defend Favorite Status With Striking

Grasso (14-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) made her pro debut in 2012, where she fought at Strawweight for the first eight years of her career. She then faced her toughest opponent in 2019 – Strawweight Champion Carla Esparza. After losing a majority decision to the champ, the Mexican fighter decided to make the switch to flyweight, where she’s currently 3-0 entering Saturday.

Like many Mexican fighters, Grasso is a technical boxer who fires crisp shots with fair-to-middling power. Her high, tight guard allows her to throw straight punches with ease, and she’s constantly bouncing around on her feet to avoid taking shots.

In her last outing, Grasso scored a rear-naked choke victory against Joanne Wood to secure her first UFC finish and first submission win ever. However, with averages of just 0.54 takedown attempts and 0.7 submission attempts per 15 minutes, it’s clear that grappling isn’t her forte. Her best bet is to outbox the Brazilian grappling artist.

Araujo Looks to Upset Opponent With Grappling Edge

Araujo (11-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has had a fairly unique MMA career thus far. After turning pro in 2015, the Brazilian won six of her first seven fights with six finishes, and became a Pancrase strawweight champion.

“Vivi” – 33 years old at the time – welcomed herself to the bright UFC stage by knocking out Talita Bernardo in 2019. Interestingly, the seemingly dominant ground fighter would wind up going her next and final six matches (4-2) without a single win by stoppage.

A black belt in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Luta Livre, the wild grappling artist loves to bounce around the ring with constant feints and takedown attempts. She’s effective at switching position and firing kicks to the body of her opponents before going for the takedown.

Although Araujo hasn’t submitted an opponent since 2016, she will most certainly utilize her supreme grappling skills to bring the fight to the mat in hopes of submitting Grasso. The 35-year-old better be careful when attempting the takedown, though, because Grasso is a speedy puncher who can quickly land a low kick if and when Araujo decides to shoot low.
