The three-peat could be in danger as the United States women’s national team looks to avoid an upset against Portugal in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. With Group E to be decided in the early morning hours on Tuesday (3 a.m. ET), we look at USA vs. Portugal odds, props, and predictions.
A tie is good enough for the U.S. women to advance to the knockout phase, and for betting purposes, a draw must be considered in case the USA takes a conservative approach.
The USA tied 1-1 with the Netherlands in their previous game, putting the top of the group up for grabs. Even with a victory, the USWNT could finish second, depending on the result of the simultaneously played Vietnam-Netherlands match. If the USWNT loses to Portugal, and the Netherlands at least ties Vietnam, the USA is out of the tournament.

USA Women’s World Cup Roster, Injuries, and Betting News
The United States is looking to extend its all-time record of FIFA Women’s World Cup conquests to five and become the first national side to achieve a three-peat in the tournament. In fact, the feat would be a first time overall, as no men’s side has won three World Cups in a row.
Five players – Alyssa Naeher, Kelley O’Hara, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Julie Ertz – are looking to make individual history by becoming the first players to be three-time World Cup winners. The USWNT is coached by Vlatko Andonovski, one of the more recognized names in the domestic league and a two-time NWSL Championship manager with the now-defunct FC Kansas City, since being appointed in 2019.
Roster
Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe are the most recognized names for casual viewers, with the latter playing off the bench in her swansong. Two important names in the goalscoring department are Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman, and bettors should also keep their eyes on Rose Lavelle, and Lynn Williams.

Smith is one of the young players to watch and a rising start at the age of 22. She has already won an NWSL Championship with the Portland Thorns, scoring the game-winning goal in the final. Rodman was also influential in helping her team win a league championship, assisting the game-winner for the Washington Spirit one year earlier.
Rose Lavelle, 28, was the young star of the USWNT at the last World Cup and scored in the 2019 Final against the Netherlands. Williams is one of the top scorers in the domestic league and, while she has yet to play, brings an explosiveness that should lead to goals.

Portugal Women’s World Cup Roster, Injuries, and Betting News
Portugal has a young feel to it from the stars of its team to its head coach. Francisco Neto, 42, has grown with this team since being hired to the position back in 2014 and leading the nation to its first-ever Women’s World Cup.
In betting terms, Portugal is playing with house money, after clinching their participation on a stoppage-time penalty kick conversion in a playoff with Cameroon. Defender Carole Costa scored the historic goal and is one of six players over the age of 30 that bring experience to a squad with rising stars.
Roster
A majority of the players, 17 of the 23 to be exact, play in the domestic league with four others in Spain, one in Italy, and one in Switzerland. The two players with the best odds to score are aged 20 and 21, and both scored against Vietnam.
Telma Encarnacao scored Portugal’s first Women’s World Cup goal and has a growing spotlight for sharing the same birthplace as one of the country’s best soccer products in Cristiano Ronaldo, even receiving advice from CR7’s mother. One year younger is Kika Nazareth, who also scored against Vietnam and, like Encarnacao, has been part of the national team’s youth system all the way up to the senior team.
Carolina Mendes and Diana Silva are among Portugal’s most experienced goalscorers, with each holding over 20 goals apiece. Silva started in Portugal’s impressive 1-0 loss to the Netherlands but was one of seven changes to the starting XI against Vietnam.

USA vs. Portugal Predictions
After facing off in the 2019 WWC Final, the USA and Netherlands are the favorites to get out of the group. Portugal is a bit of a wild card, though, and essentially has nothing to lose and everything to gain, which makes them a dangerous team.
On the right day, with the right circumstances, an upset is not out of the question. The U.S. has also not been the scoring powerhouse many expected, which could make the draw enticing.
Portugal’s chances to make something of this game likely hinge on them scoring first. The USWNT is still a stacked team with players that can provide the spectacular, so the safe bet is to not bet against them.
