The inaugural season for the USFL comes to an end on Sunday, with the Birmingham Stallions facing off with the Philadelphia Stars for the championship. Birmingham opened as a 4.5-point betting favorite at sportsbooks against the Stars. The Stallions beat the Stars in the one regular-season game between the two in Week 5, 30-17.

But both teams have evolved and improved since their first meeting.

Birmingham Stallions (10-1)

Birmingham had trouble moving the ball against a tough New Orleans defense last week, gaining just 289 total yards, well below their season average of 324.2 yards/game. But the offense made the most of its opportunities, scoring points on four of their seven drives.

The Stallions No. 1 ranked defense (total yards) gave up close to 400 yards on the day. But it came through with a pair of interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and another ended a potential Breakers’ scoring drive at the end of the first half.

Philadelphia Stars (7-4)

Philadelphia managed to do something against the Generals last week that they struggled to do all season– stop the run. New Jersey gained 106 yards (3.5 yards/carry) on the day, but for a team that averaged 160 yards/game during the regular season, that was a significant drop-off.

The defense also forced three turnovers on the day, two interceptions, and a fumble. One interception set up Philadelphia’s first touchdown of the day, and the second ended New Jersey’s final drive. However, turnovers were an issue for the Stars’ offense. One led to a Generals’ touchdown, and the other ended a drive in the red zone.

Betting Analysis: Cookus Will Keep It Close

It will be tempting to look at the Week 5 matchup between these two teams and throw your support behind the Stallions. Birmingham dominated the time of possession (38:03 to 21:57). But the key to the game was simple—Philadelphia couldn’t stop the run. The Stallions ran for 155 yards on the day (4.1 yards/carry). If the Stars struggle against the run again, the Stallions will run away with this one.

On paper, it looks like Birmingham should win this game. But Case Cookus has had a knack for keeping the Stars in games. If he can get help from the defense and the run game, the Stars could make this game competitive. They didn’t keep it close the first time these two teams met, but they will this time (and might even win).

Our Pick: Stars +4.5
