Are you ready for some football? No, you did not sleep through spring and summer and wake up in the fall. Spring football is back! The United States Football League (USFL) season gets underway this weekend with a game Saturday and a three-game slate on Sunday. Odds for Week 1 of the USFL are live at BetMGM, and the Tampa Bay Bandits have seen the line run in their favor in early wagering for Sunday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Maulers.

The Birmingham Stallions (vs. New Jersey Generals), Michigan Panthers (vs. Houston Gamblers), and New Orleans Breakers (vs. Philadelphia Stars) remain 2.5-point favorites as of Friday morning while Todd Haley’s Bandits have been bet up to -5.5 over Pittsburgh, according to the updated point spread at BetMGM.

Meanwhile, several totals have moved downward, with early bettors leaning ‘under’.

The city of Birmingham is hosting all eight teams, with 43 games set for Protective Stadium and the remainder at Legion Field.

USFL Odds: Week 1 A Great Time To Use BetMGM Bonus Code

There is never a bad time for new users to take advantage of the BetMGM Bonus Code and claim their risk-free bet. But there may not be a better time than on games in Week 1 of the USFL season. Why? Because of the unknowns surrounding the first week of USFL action.

Most of the players do not have names most football fans will recognize. Some have NFL experience but have fallen out of favor with NFL teams. Many never made it to the NFL and come from colleges that do not get a lot of national attention. The head coaches have all had some good years during their careers, but they have also had quite a few not-so-good years.

There are also a number of rule changes that could have an impact on the outcome of games in Week 1. The following are a few of the notable rule changes:

  • Teams can attempt a one or two-point conversion after touchdowns, like in the NFL, but can also go for a three-point conversion. Teams will start from the 10-yard line for the three-point try and have one play to get into the endzone.
  • Traditional onside kicks are allowed, but teams can also opt to run a fourth-and-12 play from the 33-yard line. Gain 12-yards, and maintain possession.
  • The clock stops following a first down during the final two minutes of the second and fourth quarters.
  • Overtime is a best-of-three alternating two-point attempts. If the team are still tied after three attempts, OT goes into sudden death.
  • Teams may attempt two forward passes from behind the line of scrimmage.

It is impossible to know just how some of these changes will impact the game until we see them in action — which means you should protect your bet when given the opportunity.

Generals vs. Stallions

Mike Riley (Generals) does not appear to be getting due credit for the solid work he did with the San Antonio Commanders in the AAFL and the Seattle Dragons in the XFL. That experience should benefit this team in Week 1. The most impressive thing about Skip Holtz (Stallions) is his last name. His dad was the coaching legend; he is not.

The total here moved downward from 43.5 earlier in the week.

Gamblers vs. Panthers

Kevin Sumlin (Gamblers) looked like a genius at Texas A&M with Johnny Manziel at quarterback. Without Johnny Football, not so much. He had some good years at Houston prior to his time in College Station but benefitted from having talented quarterbacks there, as well.

Jeff Fisher’s experience in the NFL should prove invaluable to the Panthers, but it is worth noting that his NFL teams were infamous for being mediocre.

Another downward move on the total here, as it was bet down from 43.5 in early wagering.

Stars vs. Breakers

Next to Mike Riley, Bart Andrus (Stars) has the most applicable experience having worked with The Spring League, the CFL, NFL Europe, and the UFL. Larry Fedora leads New Orleans. His last job was as the offensive coordinator for Baylor in 2020; the offense ranked 99th in scoring.

Bandits vs. Maulers

The pairing of Todd Haley and Jordan Ta’amu in Tampa Bay will be interesting to watch. Haley had done his best work as an offensive coordinator, and Ta’amu may be the most athletic quarterback in the league. His experience in the XFL could be crucial for the Bandits early on.

Kirby Wilson has a lengthy coaching background but has never been a head coach. He could do a fantastic job out of the gate.

This total also moved south, from 42.5 to 41.5.
