It’s a battle of future Big Ten opponents for the final four-team playoff national championship. Michigan knocked off Alabama 27-20 in overtime at the Rose Bowl, while Washington survived an almost historic collapse against Texas at the Sugar Bowl. Both teams are looking for their first national championships since the 1990s, which should make this game even more enjoyable to watch.

According to oddsmakers, the Washington vs. Michigan odds favor the Wolverines , with the total sitting around

Washington Huskies (14-0, 7-6-1 ATS)

The Washington Huskies have scratched, clawed, and crawled to a 14-0 record and a trip to the college football championship game. Many times this season, Washington looked like it was finally going to lose as they were begging teams to beat them in the middle of the season.

However, they just keep finding ways to win. Their offensive attack, led by Michael Penix Jr., is just way too talented to fail. Combine that with a receiver room that features Jalen McMillan, Ja’Lynn Polk, and possibly the best receiver in the country in Rome Odunze, and it is easy to see why teams have had no answers for the No. 1 passing attack in the country.

This Michigan defense will be, far and away, the best unit they have seen all season. But they have not faced a passing game as good as Washington. Outside of Ohio State, the Wolverines have not seen anything quite like what the Huskies bring to the table.

The biggest problem Washington will face is their ability to run the ball. They ranked 100th in rushing yards per game and 49th in yards per rush. It also does not help that starting running back Dillon Johnson went down with an injury on Washington’s final offensive play of the Sugar Bowl. It is unclear the severity of his injury, but the fact that a hot mic could pick up his screams of pain is not a good sign.

Defensively, Washington has gotten better as the season has progressed. They have not been all that great against the pass, but the Huskies have gotten clutch stops all season, and the front seven is as good as any Michigan has seen this season.

If Washington can throw the ball and protect Penix as they have all season, they will be in a great spot to win the national championship.

Michigan Wolverines (14-0, 8-5-1 ATS)

There has not been a more dominant team from start to finish this season than the Wolverines. In the regular season, the closest game they played was against Ohio State, and it never really felt like they were in danger in ‘The Game.’

Michigan has been on the doorstep of a national championship for three straight seasons, but they did what Michigan does best: lose every important postseason game they play. It looked like the same story was playing out at the Rose Bowl, as they were down 20-13 late in the fourth, and Alabama had a chance to score and put the game to bed.

However, J.J. McCarthy led the Wolverines on a 75-yard touchdown drive to send the game to overtime. From there, Michigan’s new all-time rushing touchdown leader, Blake Corum, scored on the second play of overtime to give Michigan a 27-20 lead, which ended up being the final score.

While Michigan has been teetering in the wrong direction down the stretch, this is clearly the best team in the country. The offense is as efficient as any in the country, and the defense ranks first in scoring (10.2), yards per game (244.5), and points per play (0.172).

They also only allow 5.8 yards per pass, and the defensive line has one of the country’s best sack and win rates. Washington’s offensive line is very good, so this will not be an easy matchup for the big fellas up front.

But we saw how badly Michigan confused Alabama’s offensive line at the Rose Bowl. Michigan was not even blitzing, and they were still in Jalen Milroe’s lap the entire game. If they can get to Penix, Michigan should cruise to its first outright national championship since 1948.

Washington vs. Michigan Picks: Bet the Underdog to Cover the National Championship Spread

This is genuinely a challenging game to predict.

Michigan feels like the better team, and the oddsmakers agree. However, Washington is giving off major ‘Team of Destiny’ vibes. That is not a valid reason to bet on the Huskies, but they have answered the call all season and are one game away from greatness.

Washington will only win this game if they keep Penix on his feet. If Michigan can pressure the quarterback, there is not much the Huskies can do to move the ball downfield. Stopping the run is another concern for the Huskies, but as we mentioned earlier, this front seven continues to improve every game.

The Wolverines will do what they always do. They will pound the rock and set up McCarthy to make efficient, safe throws. Although his record as the starter at Michigan is impressive, he is not a guy who can put a team on his back as Penix can.

Michigan has not allowed more than 24 points in a game this season, but that streak will end in the season’s final game. Washington’s offense is in a groove right now, and Penix is throwing the football as good as anyone ever has at this level.

As we saw at the Rose Bowl, a Jim Harbaugh-coached team is good for at least one brutal mistake per game. The Huskies are the team that will make you pay off any mistake, and they should keep this game close and cover the college football championship game spread.

Washington vs. Michigan Prediction: Washington
