Super Bowl 52 is in the books. Tom Brady did his best but could not overcome his defense along with the great game called by the Eagles and the MVP performance by “slick” Nick Foles.

Brady, the future Hall of Fame QB, tossed the pigskin for over 500 yards in Sunday’s 41-33 loss to Philadelphia.

There is not much more to say about SB 52 except it was nice to see all the players, coaches and fans standing with hands over hearts for our National Anthem. What a great rendition by super singer Pink. Thank you.

The Super Bowl is big, but for this bettor and fan March Madness has always been the bigger deal with so many teams getting to play. Plus small schools get a shot to make some cash and show they can play with the big boys.

Before we get into my college hoops and horse play of the week I want to tell a true story about my older brother Frank. Most people think he is my younger brother but he is two years older.

Have you ever been woken up in the middle of the night by someone trying to strangle you? When my brother was in high school at Big Red back in Steubenville my parents were asked to come talk with the principal. He wanted to know why Frank, who had the highest IQ in the school, only gets C’s?

My mother said he never brings a book home. Now my brother can work a crossword puzzle, answer all the Jeopardy questions and has never read a book as far as I know. He does know by heart every Perry Mason show and Hopalong Cassidy movie. My brother has not held a real job since retiring from the steel mill 30 some years ago. Those who knew him back in Steubenville called him legendary. He never lost a fist fight of any kind in grade school or high school, and he was in many.

Now on to my story. We were at Waterford race track back in the late 60’s and my brother had turned 20 dollars into several thousand hitting the first six races and every exacta. He looks at me after he collects in the sixth race, hands me a thousand dollars and says whatever you do don’t give this back to me under any circumstances. I say, you are red hot why leave now? Frank says there is a big barbotte dice game in Mingo and he is going.

Now it’s the middle of the night and I hear someone ransacking my room. It’s my bro looking for the cash. I won’t give it to him and he starts strangling me, so I give him the dime. The next day he isn’t talking. Finally he says “I ask you to do one thing and you gave me the money.”

My brother worked for a week or two at GamingToday delivering papers but the GT truck was always parked in my driveway. He was watching Perry Mason and or taking a nap. He may be a genius but I think more nuts! He dreams all the time and will get up in the middle of the night, writing down bets from his dreams.

His most recent was a dream that the Eagles would win by eight points. He didn’t make the bet, saying the money was needed to play video keno. The night before, he dreamed of 2-12-22-23-32-37, just in case you want to take a shot. The thing is everyone loves Frank or Tommy as they called him back in Steubenville in his hey days. His buds back there say he only lasted in the mill for 20 some years because of the card games they had at night.

College scene

Our college basketball play will come this Wednesday on a team this scribe thinks will be in the Final Four. VIRGINIA travels to Tallahassee to take on the Seminoles. The Cavs have the best scoring defense in the country and look to avenge their 60-58 loss to the “Noles” in Charlottesville. We love the head coach of UVA, Tony Bennett, who has his teams ready when coming off of three days rest. VIRGINIA

Don’t forget that futures bet on UVA to win it all.

Horse play

The opener this Thursday at Santa Anita. We get Cal bred maiden 3yo fillies going down the hill. No. 9 Nothing But Heat started her career going a mile on the grass. She ran an even race and now gets a turnback in distance. Being by Unusual Heat she will love this trip. We will single her in the 14% takeout pick five and also play an exacta using No. 7 An Eddie Surprise who exits the same last race.

You could be walking around lucky and not even know it.
