College Football Odds for Key Games of the Week

How to Bet On College Football Odds

There are various ways in which fans can bet on college football odds:

Point Spread

The spread indicates the expected margin of victory for a game. Odds for the team favored to win will be listed with a minus sign; odds for the underdog are listed with a plus sign. Bettors will add or subtract the spread from their chosen team’s final score.

If their adjusted score is higher than the other team’s, you win. Let’s look at the betting line for the 2021-22 CFP National Championship Game (odds via Caesars):

TeamsPoint SpreadMoneylineTotal
Georgia-2.5 (-105)-145o53 (-110)
Alabama+2.5 (-115)+125u53 (-110)

Georgia went on to win the game, 33-18. Fans that bet on the Bulldogs had to subtract the spread from the final score to see if they won their wager. Since the spread was just 2.5 points and Georgia won by 15, those fans won their wager. Bettors needed to risk $105 to win $100.

Moneyline odds

If you want to bet on a team to win outright, you want to bet the college football moneyline. The odds for favorites are listed with a minus sign; underdogs are listed with a plus sign. Moneyline odds indicate how much you can win should the team you choose win.

In the 2021-22 CFP national championship game, the moneyline on Georgia was -145. That means bettors had to risk $145 to win $100. Had Alabama won the game outright, bettors that wagered $100 would have won $125.

Total

Also referred to as the over/under; the total is a projection of the total number of points scored by both teams during the game. Bettors can take whether the actual total will be over or under the number listed.

For example, in the 2021-22 CFP title game, the total was listed as 53 points. Since the final score was 33-18 for a total of 51 points, bets on the under won. Bettors would have needed to risk $110 to win $100.

Proposition Bets

Also known as prop bets, these are wagers on aspects of the game not tied directly to the final outcome of the game. Common examples include passing yards, receiving yards, number of touchdown passes, first touchdown scored, etc.

Some states do have restrictions regarding prop bets for college sports.

For example, in the 2021-22 National Championship game, bettors could take the over or under on the passing yard total for  Bryce Young or Stetson Bennett:

  • Bryce Young, passing yards — over 306.5 -115; (PointsBet) under 314.5 -115 (DraftKings)
  • Stetson Bennett, passing yards — over 245.5 -110 (FanDuel); under 255.5 -113 (BetRivers)

Young threw for 369 yards in the game, so bets on the over paid out at -115; bettors would have had to risk $115 to win $100. As for Bennett, he threw for 224 yards, so bets on the under for his total paid out. Bettors would have needed to risk $113 to win $100.

Live Betting

Live betting gives bettors a chance to wager on a game while it is in progress. Depending on the sportsbook, you can bet on things like the outcome of the next drive, what the next play will be, spread/moneyline/total for each half, etc.

Parlays

Parlays give you the chance to combine multiple bets (called legs) to form one wager. The more legs in your parlay, the higher the payday if the parlay is a winner. However, while the reward can be great, parlays also come with significant risk since you lose if you miss on just one leg.

Sportsbooks will allow you to form parlays with bets from different games or from the same game (same-game parlays).

Is it better to be plus or minus in odds?

It depends on how you want to bet. If you are open to taking on a little risk by betting on the underdog for the chance to win more money, you’ll want to bet on plus odds. However, if you are more interested in protecting yourself and reducing risk, you’ll want to bet on favorites (minus odds). You’ll win less when you do win, but you are less likely to lose.

What does a +7 spread mean?

That means that bettors that take the underdog to win via the point spread can add seven points to their team’s final score. If the adjusted total is higher than the other team’s total, the bet is a winner.
