If you’re a Las Vegan, you or your friends probably don’t routinely suggest heading to Henderson to have a drink or play a few games. That may change if you decide to check out Charlie Holder’s Casino at 920 S. Boulder Highway.

A first impression of Charlie Holder’s is that it’s like any other small casino you may have visited, but the reality is that Holder’s is somewhat uncommon with its nearly smoke-free environment, inexpensive food and friendly staff.

Just beyond the front doors, you are immediately greeted by video gaming machines. Holder’s does have a decent variety of games, but it’s definitely dominated by the IGT Game King machines, which features multi-games in multi-denominations. Rumor has it that Holder’s will be looking to add table games to their floor in the near future.

If you’re just stopping in to have a bite to eat, you picked a good spot. Holder’s offers an assorted selection of dining options. Starting with their Tin Can Café, aside from its excellent food, it offers senior specials for 55¡, graveyard specials for 89¡ and a wide variety of Players Club specials for cardholders.

There’s also a pizzeria, where you can order at a window and pick-up your food, or have a seat anywhere in the casino and be served.

The fact that the bar never hosts a happy hour is kind of a disappointment, but they do have an entire menu for graveyard drink specials, not to mention their daily prices aren’t too bad!

What else could this 10,000 sq. foot casino possibly offer? Well, we can start with the Leroy’s Sports Book located in the hindmost part of the establishment. Here you’ll find a selection of basketball and football games to bet on individually or play via parlay cards.

In the rear of the bar is a sequestered area, which hosts extra seating, additional video machines and five big screens for sporting events. This area can be used for extra restaurant space or a private, catered party if scheduled ahead of time.

Charlie Holder’s is also planning on using its vast property for other events — promotional parties, sports parties and car shows — in the near future.

Henderson folks may remember that Charlie Holder’s was once the PT Mining Company. The Holder Group bought the property in mid 2003.

Other casinos in the fast-growing Nevada company include the Silver Club in Sparks, Sharkey’s Nugget in Gardnerville, and casinos in Hawthorne and Winnemucca.

Company officials said company owner Hal Holder, originally from South Florida, is pursuing more gaming outlets in the Silver State.

Holder, who is in his early 70s, named the Henderson casino for his infant son, Charlie

So the next time you’re cruising the Las Vegas scene, don’t hesitate to check out Charlie Holder’s, a nice reason to drive out to Henderson.
