bargain-priced brews

Got a taste for beer? The "cheap" beer special of the month is 12-ounce bottled Heineken’s for only $2 available at all casino bars inside The Cannery in North Las Vegas.

Still thirsty? Here are a few more brewery best bets: El Cortez has draft Fat Tire and Newcastle for $1.75 (12 oz.) and $2.75 (16 oz.); you can get a bucket of Corona for $10 at Bourbon Street casino for $10; and the new Shady Grove lounge in Silverton has happy hour specials (Tues.-Sat.) that include $1 for domestic draft and $2 for premium draft. Incidentally, if you haven’t seen the newly expanded and remodeled Silverton, the owners have done quite a job. Check it out when you’re near Blue Diamond.

Graveyard is a good time to be hungry at The Cannery (midnight to 7 a.m.), where you can inhale a 99-cent breakfast special with two eggs, sausage or bacon and home fries; a 10-ounce T-bone steak and eggs, $3.99; the Belly-Busting Breakfast Burrito, a large four-tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries, cheddar cheese and salsa, $2.99; and the Tower of Power, a five-cake stack of buttermilk pancakes served with whipped butter and syrup for a paltry $2.99.

Another good spot for hungry night crawlers is Bourbon Street, which features steak and lobster for only $7.77 (11 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sun.-Thurs.), and a "pound and a hound" — 16 oz. beer and a hot dog for $2.

The Golden Gate downtown keeps the spirit of old Las Vegas alive with great food specials and values ”¦ the way many long-time tourists remember it. The popular 99-cent shrimp cocktail is still going strong and the Bay City Diner is serving old-fashioned meals for just $3.99. Select from spaghetti and meatballs (with garlic bread), beef stew (with bread rolls), or a roasted half chicken served with mashed potatoes and vegetables, all available 24/7.

Also downtown, dine at Roberta’s, the upscale restaurant at the El Cortez, and receive a complimentary bottle of Robert Mondavi wine with the purchase of dinner for two.

On a final downtown note, the Plaza’s Diner (formerly the coffee shop) is now closed. (We’ll miss that $9.95 steak and lobster special!) A new restaurant is expected to be announced shortly.

Arizona Charlie’s (both locations) has a great ham or steak and eggs special for $2.99, served 24/7. On graveyard, you can enjoy 10 different $1.99 breakfast specials, and a sirloin steak dinner for $3.99. Not hungry but need a glass in your hand? Try 75-cent draft beer, $1 margaritas and $3.75 pitchers of beer, from midnight to 6 a.m.

Out on the Strip, the Sidewalk Café at Bally’s serves a prime rib and Alaskan King crab leg special for $13.95, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and New York sirloin steak and eggs for $8.95.
