Why not try a charity event?

Apr 5, 2005 1:58 AM

I have had just an lot of very good things happen to me in my life! So much so that I would be remiss if I were ever to complain about anything again.

So, today I will not complain but I must try to correct something.

But first, your are invited to play some no limit poker with Carol, Sarah and me when we join Dr. Henry Jay Bindson, who is the president and head Lion of Las Vegas Diabetes Lions Club, as well as all the membership of the Lions who have asked us to help them with a poker charity event out at Sunset Station on Sunday, April 10.

This will be a no limit hold’em charity poker tournament for the benefit of Diabetes Lions Club. Call 336-3338 for additional information.

Next, let me say that I am honored to be the coordinator of the Centennial Charity Classic which will be held on April the 30 in the Pavilion Room of the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas.

I will be the poker coach of his honor Oscar Goodman, the mayor of Las Vegas. And I make the line 8-5 that his honor will make it to the final table. Yes, I will be sure to request that he only sip a little juice while his honor is playing poker! (And save the gin for little later.)

This poker happening will be an official part of the100th birthday party of the city of Las Vegas and will be a fund raiser for the YMCA and "The Seniors" Charities.

Everyone is invited to the 9 a.m. registration and satellites on Saturday, April 30.

The poker tournament will be No Limit Hold’em with a $500 registration and a lot of prizes and surprises!

The Sign Design Theater will be a part of the opening ceremonies when John Breeding will be inducted into "The Seniors" World Championship of Poker/ Poker Players Hall of Fame; and The Silver Eagle, Bob Thompson, will be installed as the inaugural member of the Stewards of Poker.

For more information please see the advertisement in the GamingToday beginning April 12 or call 702-877-9622 or visit lasvegasymca.org.

In several past columns I have been an advocate for creating a new organization to improve and protect the game of poker.

I submit to you that this new organization, The Stewards of Poker, is needed for many reasons. There is not time nor space to repeat here all of the reasons for creating The Stewards of Poker, but if you would like more detail e-mail me at [email protected] and I will put you on the newsletter mailing list.

Now I will tell you what I think must be corrected.

Incorrect statements have been published about my plan. I will not take the time to quote all that was published, but here is one quote: "I’m talking about his poker stewards. Several times in his column, he proposed organizing a team of senior citizen stewards who would travel to casinos to render fair and unbiased decisions in poker tournaments."

Now, that is not exactly what I had in mind, but I can live with that statement.

But the next statement is over the top and without any truth in it whatsoever!

"Because casino staffers shouldn’t be trusted ”¦"

Now, I never said nor have I ever thought nor have I ever written that statement. I cannot understand who would say or publish this. It is untrue and I would have no reason to ever say such a thing.

I have played in poker tournaments for so many years all around the world and I am happy to report to the poker public that I think that the casino staffers who run the tournaments are professional in the administration of their responsibilities.

I have many friends who are casino staffers who would be hurt if they were to read such an untrue statement.

Poker Tip of the Week

If you have been to college, you’ll understand what I mean when I say "Spot your prof."

When you are spotting a prof, you are trying to anticipate what he will be asking you on the next exam.

In the same way at the poker table, you "spot" your opponents ”¦ you try to outthink them by figuring out what they’re going to do next.

You will have a great advantage when you can predict what your opponent’s next action will be. If you know that when you check that they will check, or if you bet they will call, or if you check they will bet ”¦ If you can accurately predict the actions of your opponent in response to your actions, you will know the future and you will win the money!

If you learn their "tells" and can "spot" your opponents you can take the money home and count it there.

Until next time remember to stay lucky.
