Josh Beckett, World Series hero 2003, seems back to his overpowering form. The Florida Marlins talented right-hander has hurled shutouts in back-to-back starts. In fact, in six games, the Marlins staff has not allowed more than four runs. Beckett’s next start figures to be in New York on Saturday against the Mets and Pedro Martinez.
Watch out for the Baltimore Orioles. The Birds, coming off a series win over the Yankees in New York, start the week at Tampa Bay. Then comes the rematch with the Yanks at Camden Yards. A lot of the talk around the O’s centered on the acquisition of Sammy Sosa. We like Brian Roberts, an undervalued player with surprising power. Roberts hit three homers the first week, plays a solid second base and is durable.
FYI: Underdogs have won 36 of 69 games (52.1 percent) since last Wednesday (not including Monday’s results)
