Nothing like a solid 8-way 8-spot

Occasionally I am compelled to play an 8-way-8. I have no explanation, perhaps it is just the symmetry that appeals, but play it I must. Over the years I have tried several, including the six tickets below.

It is a keno oddity that the first five tickets can all be created from one another by morphing just one group, thought the sixth ticket (and my favorite) is different.

As far as I can see, one would have to morph at least three groups on any of the first five to get to the sixth. It’s enough to give Stirling a headache.

Of the first five, the one I have played the most often is the 5 5 2 2 1 1. It is simple to check for winners mentally, which is one of my pleasures of keno. I like to see what I have won before the machine checks the ticket. Each 8-way is made up of one group of 5, one group of 2, and one group of 1.

Do the math: There are two of each sized group, and it takes one of each sized group to make an 8. 2 x 2 x 2 = 8.

I don’t generally play tickets like the 11 spot, the first one. With its field of five in play on every way, it is vital to hit the field, but my thinking is, "Why not just play the five?"

3 Way-4 4 Way-3 3 Way-2 2 Way-1

This last ticket is the 8-way-8 that I play most frequently. It can be thought of as having two fields — a field of 5 and a field of one. Each field figures into 4 of the ways, so it is balanced. I sometimes play the 3-way-12 on this one too, and I have had some fun with it, but I have never won anything big with it. Yet.

That’s it for this week. Goood Luck! I’ll see you in the lounge.
