NCAA should quit giving Indians bad name

Just a short thought as I am ticked and have to get this off my back.

Major league baseball has set the tone for punishment of its athletes: Ten days for steroid use and 20 days for shoving a cameraman! NCAA eliminates mascots of Indians like the Seminoles of Florida State fame.

Now the state and the Seminole tribe are planning on suing the NCAA. Florida State commits the crime of using the Seminole name and also awarding full scholarships to members of the Indian tribe so they can obtain their college degrees. Incidentally, the Indian tribe supports the use of the Seminole name and is also opposed to the NCAA decision. This probably doesn’t matter since FSU won’t make the basketball tournament anyway.

The NCAA is also eliminating the Fighting Illini mascot. The Indian chief has been a symbol of the school for over 100 years. One of the greatest Big Ten traditions is when the chief weaves his way through the marching band to emerge as the leader at the start of each Illini football game. Incidentally, Illinois is an Indian word. Maybe the NCAA should just rename the state.

The NCAA has also ruled it to be an infraction for some fans to donate money to pay for an airline ticket. Yeah it was "so wrong" that a father, currently training policeman in Baghdad, would want to come home and see his son who is a lineman for Boise State play against Georgia "between the hedges."

When will the NCAA rule against Fighting Irish, Aztecs, Spartans, Trojans, Sun Devils and Blue Devils? Aren’t these derogatory mascots? I guess devil worship is OK.

Thursday, Aug. 18

Saints +4½ at Patriots (38½): Saints now 2-7 ATS under HC Haslett. Pats keep rolling. PATS, OVER.

Friday, Aug. 19

Titans +4½ at Falcons (38½): Titans 8-1-1 in last 10 preseason road games. Won’t buck that trend. TITANS, OVER.

Vikings +1 at Jets (39): The Jets continued good preseason play with 10-3 win last week over Detroit. Now 12-6 ATS in last 18. JETS.

Bengals +2½ at Redskins (37): Skins at home look a very good play. Lay the points and go to the bank. REDSKINS.

Saturday, Aug. 20

Browns +6 at Lions (37): Lions nice 3-1 ATS at home in preseason under Mariucci. Look for Detroit to take advantage of team trying to find itself. LIONS.

Packers +5½ at Bills (36½): Pack very lucky in win last week over the Chargers. Won’t get lucky here. Buffalo, off big win over the Colts, will do the same here. BILLS.

Jaguars +2½ at Bucs (35): TB continued great preseason play under HC Gruden with 20-17 win at Titans last week. BUCS, UNDER.

Dolphins (NL) at Steelers: I would side with Pittsburgh if laying —4 or less. If so, STEELERS. If not, pass.

Raiders +1 at Texans (38): Raiders stay on the road, but can’t endorse the Texans, now 2-12 SU and 3-11 ATS in preseason. In light play, RAIDERS.

Panthers +1 at Giants (36): Panthers now 9-0 in preseason under Fox. Tough game, but won’t switch. PANTHERS.

Eagles (NL) at Ravens: Am not crazy about this game, but don’t see a lot of scoring. UNDER.

Bears +6½ at Colts (40): QB-less Bears may be in deep trouble here. Colts coming off back-to-back losses may look to unload on somebody. COLTS.

Cards +4½ at Chiefs (40½): I would take some points with the Cards, especially if able to get a field goal. CARDS.

49ers +7 at Broncos (38): Can’t buck well coached Denver, whose HC Mike Shanahan demands perfection. BRONCOS.

Rams +4½ at Chargers (39): Rams 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS in last six preseason road games. Chargers 2-0 after SU loss. CHARGERS.
