Broadway Benniewould appreciate finding right hat

Some people just don’t understand.

I was walking through the book and a regular tells me I wear a different hat every week. I told him it’s not that I want to wear a different one every week, just trying to find the right one. He walked away puzzled like I was giving it to him.

It’s been that way since my early days going to Waterford Park. If something seemed good, you kept doing it. Whether a lucky hat, parking spot etc.

My father, "Broadway Bennie," won the most money he ever did one day when we got stuck at a railroad crossing by a train just a few miles from the racetrack. He wrote down the license number of the car in front of us and played those numbers in a trifecta. It hit for 20k and he had the only winning ticket.

Every time after that he was hoping that train would come by again.

Vida Blue of the Oakland A’s believed the same baseball hat he wore since Opening Day 1974 brought him good luck for three straight seasons. But in 1977 the umpires wanted the hat removed because it was so faded. When Blue persisted, he was threatened with a fine and ejection.

Blue finally conceded, but not before he burned the hat on the field before the game. He then proceeded to lose a league-high 19 games that year. So if you see me with the same hat on two or three weeks in a row, just ask me who I am betting!

Last week: 2-4

Season: 18-23

College Football

NC State +4½ at Ga Tech: Thursday special. GT had needed week off after being crushed by Virginia Tech, but played very well prior to that with wins over Auburn, North Carolina and a good Connecticut team. NC State played VT tooth and nail in opener, but couldn’t handle UNC. State 2-7-1 vs. GT in last 10 tries. GA TECH.

Virginia +6½ at BC: The Virginia defense looks very suspect, giving up 24 points to Syracuse and 45 to Maryland. BC defense can play. If the offense put points up like Syracuse and Maryland, Eagles will cover. BC.

Kansas +7 at Kansas St.: Both teams very average. Must side with K-State, looking to avenge last year’s 31-28 loss to the Jayhawks. Prior to that, State won and covered nine straight in series. K-STATE.

Minn +7½ at Michigan: Not so heated battle for Little Brown Jug. Wolverines have won it 34 of last 36 tries. Michigan got a much needed confidence builder in OT win over Michigan State last week. The Gophers defense was exposed by Purdue and Penn State and look to be overmatched. MICHIGAN.

Texas A&M +3 at Colorado: The Buffaloes played better than the score showed against Miami, then came back and shut out Oklahoma State. I have no respect for A&M, which barely beat Baylor at home in OT. Colorado is 5-1 ATS last six meetings. COLORADO.

California +2 at UCLA: I think they may have the wrong favorite. Look for the Cal defense to shut down UCLA, who was very fortunate in win over Oklahoma and extremely lucky in late comeback against Washington. CAL.

In the NFL, some games the bookies just can’t make low enough this year. You would think there would be some correction, but I will have to take a wait and see attitude. Maybe when they over adjust, you can start to bet some "overs."

Bucs NL at Jets: TB four games, four ”˜unders.’ Jets four games, three ”˜unders.’ UNDER

Dolphins +2½ at Bills (33): Buffalo has zero offense. The only way this game can go over is Miami scoring in the 20s. UNDER.

Ravens +2 at Lions (33): The Raves have scored 1, 10 and 13. The Lions have scored 17, 6 and 13. UNDER

Titans +2½ at Texans (41): Where did 41 come from? Texans have scored 7, 7 and 10. The Titans have the ability to get three touchdowns. TITANS, UNDER.

Redskins +7½ at Broncos (34½): Looks like a good game. Skins have scored 7, 13 and a whopping 20 in OT last week. Broncos defense has played great the past two weeks, giving up 10 and 7. UNDER.

Bengals +3 at Jaguars (38): Cincy ”˜D’ has given up zilch in four games
(13, 8, 7, 10) with all four games going below the total. Bengals 1-7-1 ATS in last nine meetings. JAGUARS, UNDER.

Last week: 1-1

Season: 4-3

Next Monday, if you still see me wearing my Pittsburgh hat you’ll know these games went ”˜under.’
