All the epic finishes last week in college football have been discussed to death. I instead will focus upon the human billboard — Kansas head football coach Mark Mangino.
The only offense the Jayhawks have is seeing this man unable to fit onto my 36-inch screen. I’m not sure hi-def Mangino is in my future. I know betting KU isn’t.
Last week: 4-6
Yom Kippur has passed. My luck, incomplete.
Syracuse at Pitt (44½): Get out the Pepto. If you can call a comeback win over So. Florida hot, Pitt is scalding. Cuse off a disgraceful home loss to Rutgers. If there’s a total on this egg, we’ll scramble to the book. UNDER.
N’western +11½ at Mich St.: Anything under 80, we’re there. OVER.
Virginia PK at UNC: Erratic Cavaliers get caught in Chapel Hill. celebrating big over Florida State. Tar Heels well rested and capable at home. UNC.
Vandy +7½ at S. Carolina: The Gamecocks, off a bye week, take full advantage of a weary opponent coming off LSU and Georgia back-to-back weeks. CAROLINA.
Temple +36½ at Clemson: Miami called off the dogs at halftime. At Death Valley, the Tigers won’t. CLEMSON.
Tenn +3½ at Bama (38½): The defenses dominate potential epic in Tuscaloosa. Our $$$ is on Bama QB Brodie Croyle, but feel safer with total. UNDER.
Oregon St +9½ at UCLA: The Beavers caught Cal sulking over UCLA loss and handed the G-Bears a second defeat. UCLA escaped the Paloose in a thrilling OT shootout. Expect big days from the Drews. OVER.
Kansas +14½ at Colorado: The Buffaloes can score and KU can’t. It’s just that simple. COLORADO.
USC -30 at Washington: The Trojans have gone four straight weeks without covering. Odds are they will score at will on the Huskies. USC.
Boise St. -19 at Utah St.: The oddsmaker continue to pile on the spread the Broncs must cover and they keep coming up short. We hope lightning strikes again. UTAH ST.
Turning to the NFL, things are so bad for the Vikings that they might as well throw a party. Oops, been there done that. Note to coach Mike Tice — the clock is ticking.
As for my fantasy team, I’m seriously thinking of dumping Daunte Culpepper for the draft rights to USC’s Matt Leinart. Would you believe I had the Vikes +12 in an eight-team super tease. Guess which one I missed?
I guess it all goes back to that Yom Kippur thing.
On to Week 7.
Packers +3 at Vikings: Brett Favre needs some good fortune after all the devastation in native Mississippi. Off a bye and playing the hapless Vikes will ease the wound a bit. PACKERS.
Ravens at Bears (32): First score wins. UNDER.
Titans +3 at Cards: Arizona coming off a bye and is really a better team than the record shows. CARDS.
Steelers +3 at Bengals: Can’t wait for this one. Big Ben should be back, but Carson Palmer never left. Cincy is for real and holds serve at home. BENGALS.
Chargers +4 at Eagles: Bad spot for San Diego, flying cross country after hard divisional battle with the Raiders. Meanwhile, T.O. and D-Nabb healed a bit over bye week. EAGLES.
