Zook has Illin-noyed

My vote for the worst game of the year goes Penn State-Illinois, in which the host Illini scored the first three points before giving up 55 straight — in the first half! No wonder Florida couldn’t wait to unload Ron Zook. Now, he’s Illinois’ problem.

It appears the next Game of the Year candidate in the chase for the national championship will be UCLA-USC at the L.A. Coliseum on Dec. 3.

The Pac-10 archrivals remain unbeaten and on a collision course to the most significant contest played in college football since the SC-Notre Dame game and the early-season Texas-Ohio State battle in Columbus.

This year’s formula for making a national champion is mixing an elite Pac 10 offense with an SEC defense. What you come up with is Texas.

Last week: 4-5

Season: 39-41

This year I’ve mostly written about college and won with the NFL. Why? Well, GT analysts Andy Iskoe, Denny The Dog and Richard Saber do a great job breaking down the pros in their own styles. I’d rather be pithy and keep winning.

My dad prefers it, too.

Georgia +5 vs Florida at Jax: World’s largest cocktail party will see more scoring in the stands than on the field. Injury to Georgia QB Shockley leads to a conservative game plan. GEORGIA, UNDER 41½.

Wisconsin -19 at Illinois: Let’s pour kerosene on this fire. WISCONSIN.

Purdue +15 at Penn St.: The Nittany Lions won’t lose the rest of the year. But, Illinois will give anyone a big head. PURDUE.

So. Miss +5 at NC State: Why are these teams playing this late in the year? State is declining and disinterested. The Eagles are rising and would love adding an ACC scalp to the resume. USM.

Air Force +5½ at BYU: The Cougars hung with Notre Dame for a while. Force never plays well the week before this game. Falcons will rebound. FORCE.

Michigan -3 at N’wstrn: You have to love Brett Basanez and that Northwestern offense. The Wolverines are road favorites again. That’s trouble. OVER 61.

S.C. +14 at Tenn: Fulmer’s worst nightmare? Losing to Spurrier away from Florida. SC

UCLA -7½ at Stanford: The Bruins need to be careful here with Stanford coming off upset of Arizona St. UCLA.

Ohio St. -5½ at Minnesota:Ginn vs. Maroney will be fun, Game opened -3. OSU survives, barely. MINNESOTA.
