Upset alert for UNC, Duke on road

Jan 10, 2006 2:29 AM

And, then there were three.

Illinois, Villanova and Ohio State left the land of the unbeatens last weekend, leaving Duke, Florida and Pittsburgh beginning this week still with perfect records.

It’s interesting to look at the remodeled Big East with arguably the greatest assortment of talent ever placed in one conference. Of the mammoth 16 team league, only newcomer South Florida (6-8 SU, 4-5 ATS) owns a losing straight up record. Bettors should note that the "under" has cashed seven times in nine board games involving USF.

Congrats to the UCLA Bruins, who beat Arizona in Tucson for the first time in nine years, then doubled down with a one-point win at Arizona State.

Last week: 5-2

Season: 5-2

On to this week in college hoops, using GamingToday lines.

UNC -3½ at Va Tech (Tue): The Hokies have been a different team since losing by just 2 at Cameron. UNC is playing only its third road game and Tech is 8-1 in its gym. VA TECH.

Marshall +1½ at UCF (Wed): Central Florida will use the momentum from an outstanding cover (losing by 2 as a 22-point dog) at Kentucky to open C-USA play with a win. The Herd is just 2-5 ATS. UCF.

Washington PK at USC (Thu): At 12-2 SU, the Huskies are not really missing Nate Robinson, now with the Knicks. SC beat UNC at home and is capable of pulling off the upset in the wild Pac 10. USC.

Cornell +20½ at Penn (Fri): The worst and best in the Ivy League. Penn more than held its own against Villanova and Duke. Cornell gets an education. PENN.

Duke -12½ at Clemson (Sat): They don’t call it Upset Saturday for nothing. The Tigers are tough at Littlejohn and should be a good play as a double-digit home dog. CLEMSON.

TCU +20 at Air Force (Sat): At 14-1 SU, the host Falcons have been one of the major surprises in the country. The Frogs are at the bottom of the Mountain West with a 4-10 overall mark. Can Frogs breathe in high altitude? AIR FORCE.

Mich St +9 at Ohio St (Sun): Spartans are battle tested over the years under HC Izzo and should at least cover against the Buckeyes. OSU is 9-0 in Columbus, but just 2-3 ATS. We like taking quality dogs in the Big Ten. MICHIGAN ST.
