First of all, I would like to thank all my fellow horseplayers for the kind words regarding last week’s article. Hopefully, something good comes out of it for all of us who play the ponies.
Talking about horses, several people asked me about the Andrew Beyer story in the Racing Form two weeks ago concerning Turfway Park. Turfway has come up with a program that enables players losing their parimutuel tickets to get reimbursed. All they have to do is sign up, get a players card and use it when making bets.
Now if players lose, make bets and leave or forget to get a result and throw their tickets away, the track has come up with a tracking system to get the money back to the customer. When a ticket is about to expire, Turfway flags the number associated with the ticket. When players use their card, the track will find the player and issue a replacement ticket for the one that was lost.
Several people told me they thought this was a good idea and that race books here in Nevada should do something similar. Well, I told them that they have the best fail safe system there is, much better than the one at Turfway. It is called IPT ( Race Interactive Player Terminals). Playing the IPT’s are the best way to solve the problems of losing or tossing a ticket and missing a scratch.
Imagine leaving before the result is official and, after an inquiry, the track puts your horse up only to see you tossed your ticket! Most of the major books have these terminals in their race books. All you do is put up some cash, get an account number, sit there and make your plays. The info you need and more are on these terminals. Scratches, past results, entries and up to date odds on payoffs are all there.
The IPT’s also track your card number for those food comps and, maybe in the future, some free money during the week. So if you are like me and don’t like to wait in those long lines at post time, the IPT’s are for you. They are the end to worries about tickets, so check them out at your favorite race book. Tell them I sent you and they will either give you a free buffet or 86 you!
Now let’s take a look at this week’s NFL Divisional playoff games.
Saturday, Jan. 14
Redskins +9 at Seahawks (41): These two met in October when Seattle traveled to Washington and lost as a two point underdog, 20-17. Now the Seahawks are solid home favorites. I think they have over adjusted just a tad. This game should be no higher than -7. At this bargain spread”¦ REDSKINS.
Patriots +3½ at Broncos (43): Wow what a game this will be! Can’t take anything away from Denver at home, looking to break the amazing Tom Brady streak of never losing a playoff game he’s started. I can’t bet against Brady and a team that looks to be peaking with all their players back and healthy. If the Pats happen to get beat, I don’t see more than a field goal in OT. This is one take I will be all over. PATS.
Sunday, Jan. 15
Steelers +9½ at Colts (48): I thought the Steelers were in deep water last week at Cincy, but QB Palmer went down early. Pittsburgh’s"D" took over in the second half to shut out the Palmerless Bengals, giving HC Bill Cowher his first playoff road win. The Colts beat the Steelers in late November, 26-7 — Big Ben’s first game back from an injury. Now, he is in top form and it will take the real Colts to win. Not the ones showing up at the end of the season. Indy has had a big distraction and I hope all is fine, but don’t know if they can cover the number. I don’t seem to ever be right with the Steelers, but I do like them here. If you are a smart bettor, take the points on the road. STEELERS.Panthers +3 at Bears (30½): The Panthers sure looked good last week against the Giants. If they carry that intensity, this will be a humdinger. For those who like offense, it will be boring. I would bet the Bears -2½ or take +3½ with Carolina. I think I’ll take +9 with the Panthers in a 6 point teaser. If my first three games come in, I will try to middle it with the Bears. So the play will be a 6 point teaser with the Redskins +15, Patriots +9½, the Steelers +15½ and the Panthers +9. If you are still alive, lay the number on the Midway Monsters. BEARS.
