In a career crossroads fight for both, the public was right on in backing Sugar Shane Mosley against Fernando Vargas this past Saturday at Mandalay Bay.

Mosley posted a 10th round TKO over Vargas, whose swollen eye forced stoppage of the fight. Some late money came in on Vargas, who closed as a +155 underdog," according to Mandalay Bay race and sports manager Jay Rood. Mosley opened at Mandalay at -165 and rose to -185 before winding up at -170.

"There was a pretty good turnout at the Events Center and we were cashing tickets here for a good hour after the fight," Rood said. "On a scale from 1-to-10, I would rate it 7 to 7½. Considering the way his (Vargas) face swelled up. I can see why they stopped it. Vargas had to fight more defensively."

GamingToday’s Hall of Fame boxing writer Michael Katz was correct last week in predicting Mosley to defeat Vargas.

UFC 58: USA/Canada

Mandalay Bay will have odds available this week for Saturday’s Ultimate Fighting pay-per-view card between Canada and the USA.

The featured bout on the card is champion Rich Franklin of Cincinnati against Montreal’s David Loiseau for the middleweight title.

The top fight on the undercard is the comeback fight of former welterweight champion BJ Penn vs. the UFC’s No. 1 contender George St. Pierre.

Rood said the Mandalay sports book would have prices on the four PPV bouts.

The PPV fights are slated to begin at 7 p.m. Doors at the Mandalay Bay Events Center open to the public at 4 p.m.
