No ‘conn’ job:
Mad about those Huskies

As we close in on the Big Dance, let’s take a short look at some of this week’s tournaments.

On Wednesday, we have the Big East, the Atlantic 10, Conference USA, PAC 10 and the Big West. On Thursday it’s the ACC, Big Ten, one of my favorites the MAC, and the SEC. Now, that’s some hoops!

Big East: We all know UConn is the cream. I believe the Huskies will go all the way. Next we have four teams (Villanova, WVU, Pitt and Georgetown) that could make some noise. Nova is my gut play — so well coached and make very few mistakes. Pitt is physical and can play the inside game with anyone. WVU depends too much on the three pointers. G’Town did beat Duke so we know the Hoyas are capable to upset. I see a Nova-UConn rematch, which will be like watching a Final Four game. Take the points if it happens. NOVA.

Atlantic 10: NCAA-bound George Washington looks like a good bet against with big guy Mensah-Bonsu out until the first round with the scoped knee. Temple, Charlotte, St. Louis or St Joe could win the tourney. Temple was a complete no show this past Sunday losing to Fordham at home as an 11 point favorite. Charlotte will play above its game. Take a shot and make a little play. CHARLOTTE.

C-USA: No doubt, Memphis is the best. Undefeated in league play with losses only to Duke and Texas. The Tigers will be a double digit favorite over everyone, including 20-game winner UAB. Houston and UTEP are the other contenders, but don’t see anyone going the distance in Memphis. The Tigers want this tournament and a No. 1 seed. This could be a Final Four team. MEMPHIS.

MAC: The main contenders are Akron, Kent and Miami of Ohio. Kent completed its eighth straight 20-win campaign, but not much separate the top three. Kent needs to win the tournament to Dance, or it’s off to the NIT. High scoring Akron could pull it off, but I’ll take my chances with the Golden Flashes. Their games should exceed the posted total. KENT, OVER.

Mountain West: I really have little interest except that I would love to see UNLV win it. That said, I’ll pass and just root.

BIG TEN: I wonder what team I like here? All I know is that the Ohio State football team won the Big Ten. The men’s and women’s basketball teams won the regular season titles. Buckeye land is just loaded. OHIO ST.

AN OSCAR FOR AVELLO

I know you can’t bet on the Academy Awards in Las Vegas, but there is always a ton of interest and Johnny Avello puts odds up for just show. No dough allowed, but JA really does a good job. I used to just love watching the Oscars back when there were real movies and movie songs. Now, there are gay cowboy movies and stupid rap songs.

With a couple exceptions like Best Actor, my good friend Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote and Reese Witherspoon for Walk the Line, the Oscar has gotten a bad name. That’s a shame. My hat really goes off to one of my favorite actresses Jennifer Tilly. Remember the movie Let It Ride when she wore that red dress. Well, Tilly was in Vegas playing poker and really has her priorities in order. Way to go Jennifer! GamingToday is proud of you.
