April heaven:
Jumbo Race Jackpot,
streaking teams

A few months ago, I wrote how race bettors were getting no respect. Slot machine players seemed to be reaping big rewards and then there are those big "bad beat" jackpots in poker.

Well, Station Casinos has taken the bull by the horns. Starting this week all Station race books will be part of the new Jumbo Race Jackpot. Just go to the window, swipe your Players Card and possibly win between $5,000 and $20,000. Since this was my idea, I hope those racing Gods shine on me. I could use a few K before traveling to Saratoga in August.

It has taken a lot of time for something good to happen for us everyday race bettors. Perhaps this could lead the way for other major casinos to jump on the bandwagon and throw some stuff our way. Also, I’m sending a big thanks to Art Manteris and Station Casinos for starting something good for us lowly race players.

Red Rock Station will be opening April 18 and all the feedback I have received has been very positive, especially the race and sports book. I will be there this Thursday for a sneak preview and will give you all the skinny. I do know they have more than 200 seats, a VIP area with its own teller, 28 IPT terminals and available food delivery from the Turf Grill. I like that feature the best!

The first week of baseball was okay for me. Some nice streaks were available to play, such as Pittsburgh losing six and the Brew Crew winning five. In the American League, you could have cashed big Saturday with going against the White Sox as a big chalk at KC. Chicago had lost three straight, then made it four after falling to the Royals 4-3.

The Tigers, like Milwaukee, also won five straight and look to have a nice club this year. As for the run lines, there were only two this past week. If you looked hard enough Saturday, the Royals +1½ (+101) was a winner and Sunday the Devil Rays +1½ (+105) also won. That’s a good start!

This week, there are a couple of streaks to follow. The Mets, Cubs and Rockies have each won three in a row. I also look for the Pirates to have a good homestand, so you may want to take a few shots with them at what will be nice prices. In the AL, Cleveland has won five straight, while both Red Sox and A’s are on four-game runs. On the other end, Minnesota has dropped four straight. So go get ’em!

Pedro Martinez is on a streak of his own, hitting four batters including Jose Guillen twice. How is that possible for such a fine pitcher to plunk so many hitters in one game? Is Pedro head hunting or has he just lost his control? How long will it be before an opposing pitcher sends a message, while Pedro is at bat?

Just four weeks until the Kentucky Derby and I have finally have a rooting interest. Bob And John stormed home in the Wood Memorial this past Saturday and now will head to Churchill Downs as one of the top five contenders.

His trainer Bob Baffert has stated that B & J reminds him a lot of Real Quiet, who he also trained and won the Derby. This could be a good omen for me. I was at the Derby and had money on Real Quiet, who paid $20. I’m passing on Louisville this year and fighting the big crowds. I’m too old for that, plus I hate to fly anymore. Me and my buddy David Stratton are here sitting on Bob And John future book tickets at 100-1

Now we just have to hope nothing bad happens in four weeks.
