John James named COO by The Regent

John J. James has been appointed chief operating officer at the Regent Hotel/Casino t Summerlin. He began his duties Monday.

The 40-year-old gaming executive will assist Darrell Leury in "growing the property, with special emphasis on providing customers with what they want."

James was a casino executive with George Maloof at the Fiesta prior to that property’s sale to Station Casinos Inc. Before that, James was vice president and general manager at Boomtown Las Vegas, now known as the Silverton.

He and his wife, Marlene, have two daughters, Laura, 13 and Julianne, 10. Marlene James also is a casino executive, having spent the past 24 years in the slots department of the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas.

Vic Salerno, chairman and CEO of American Wagering Inc. (BETM), will take on the added duties of chief operating officer in a restructuring of the company’s executives.

Salerno announced that Bob Ciunci had resigned as chief financial officer, chief operating officer, secretary, and treasurer for personal reasons. Ciunci will stay on as a director.

Succeeding Ciunci as chief financial officer is Tim Lockinger, a former consultant who joined the company on a full-time basis in 1997 as manager of Mega$ports and Leroy’s. He also will be treasurer and a member of the board of directors.

Also joining the board is Judy Salerno, one of the company’s major stockholders. She is the daughter of Leroy Merillat, founder of Leroy’s Horse & Sports Palace.

Promotions have been announced for two Park Place Entertainment Corp. (PPE) executives. Bill Bigelow, president of Las Vegas Hilton, has been given responsibility for all Park Place Entertainment properties in northern Nevada as well as the Flamingo Laughlin. And, Mark Rittorno, senior vice president of hotel operations at Paris and Bally’s Las Vegas, has been named president of Flamingo Las Vegas.

Chuck Scharer says he will resign as president and CEO of Harveys Casino Resorts, owned by Colony Capital. His duties will be assumed by Thomas Barrack, Jr., chairman and CEO of Colony.

Ted Fahrenbrink has been named director of security for Boulder Station Hotel & Casino. He has been with Station Casinos Inc. (STN) since 1994.

Dominic F. Polizzotto has been appointed senior vice president and chief legal counsel for Horseshoe Gaming Holding Corp. It promoted Jon Wolfe to senior vice president and chief information officer.

GameTech International Inc. (GMTC) of Reno, Nev., has named Mark E. Simon as vice president of operations.
