For years, privately-held Delaware North Companies, an offshoot of the late Louis Jacob’s tainted Sports Service Corporation, ran a dinky-dink thoroughbred racetrack called Finger Lakes in upstate New York.
After decades of marginal success, Finger Lakes came home a winner”¦not with horses, so much, but with slot machines. It became one of three video lottery machine sites operated by Delaware North. The other two are Saratoga Gaming and Raceway and Fairgrounds Gaming & Raceway.
Looking to parlay that success into a larger operation, Jeremy Jacobs’ Delaware North will join forces with the Empire Racing Group in seeking the license to operate the three New York Racing Association thoroughbred tracks — Saratoga, Aqueduct and Belmont.
And with the franchise will go the right to operate some 4,500 VLT’s at Aqueduct.
That will be quite a jump from Finger Lakes.
