Bad picks can work

Sometimes when you’re bad, something good from it can happen.

Picking football winners is tough, even on the day of the game. When you are trying to pick every game in preseason it’s almost impossible. I’ve had some good years, but this last one was a total disaster.

I wound up 1-6 last week and 20-41 for the preseason. My uncle back in the "Ville" called me and said you stink! I was having some dinner at Anna Bella, one of my favorite places, and when I asked for the bill they said the guy at the other table picked up the tab.

"I had a big year betting on the NFL preseason," the gentleman told me. "I just bet the opposite."

Wow! Just another happy GamingToday reader. By the way, the food was great.

For all of our Steubenville faithful readers out there, Big Red won its first two games so far, running the regular season win streak to 32 straight.

NFL football contests will be up and rolling this week. There are all the good ones from the past like the $1,000 entry at Station Casinos and then you have the contest for us little guys with $25 fees. Palms continues its contest this year if you want to take a shot with less people. Plus, the Hilton will have its Super Contest with a $1500 fee.

Brando’s, which has several top notch bars around town, will offer a free contest at all properties. It’s a good stop if you drink, like good slots and enjoy top notch pizza. If you like the ladies, definitely stop at the Palomino Club in North LV and take a shot at the free contest. A classic 1956 BuickCentury Riviera is part of the prize package.

Harrah’s has really jumped on the NFL football contest scene in a big way offering Glory of the Gridiron for the big hitters. The weekly football junkies like us can join the First And $5,000 weekly contest. The Gridiron has a $2000 entry fee compared to just $20 for First And $5,000.

That First And $5,000 is great if your luck is bad or just late in getting the card in. You still have a shot at the big cash. It’s for the guy or gal that doesn’t want commitment. I know lots like that. Each week a new contest starts with Harrahs puttings up the first 5K. Then all the money collected is then added to the prize pool. There is no limit on how many cards you can put in.

Sean Salisbury from ESPN will be at Caesars Palace every Friday from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. to conduct a Q & A session in the Sports Book. The former QB for USC and the Minnesota Vikings will also break down the weekend’s NFL games. For more info, stop in any Harrah’s Race and Sports book for more details.

I do like a few college games this week and love one. I’ll drop in a couple of NFL just to get my feet wet.

Oregon St +7 at Boise St: Boise hasn’t missed a step even with first year HC Chris Petersen, who waited in the wings for his big chance. Boise cruised last week to a very easy 45-0 whitewash of Sac State. Boise is 2-0-1 ATS in three meeting including a 53-34 win in ’04 as an 8 point favorite. BOISE ST.

Pitt -8 at Cincinnati: Both teams coming off nice wins. The Panthers beat up on Virginia 38-13, while the Bearcats shut out overmatched Eastern Ky 31-0. Cincy will be much tougher this year as third-year HC and ex Ohio State defense coach Mark Dantonio looks to have a very strong defense. I see a tough game. CINCY.

Va Tech -11 at UNC: The VT defense will take control of the game early and give the offense many more chances to score. Not much for Tech to look forward to next week facing very weak Duke. Carolina was embarrassed at home by Rutgers, but I don’t believe they have enough to get any revenge here. VT

Vandy +16 at Alabama: Vandy has lost 20 straight to the Tide, but are 8-2-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings. The "Dores" can play and those points look great. VANDY.

Colo St -2 at Colorado: Ex Boise HC Dan Hawkins took the big bucks to come here and was welcomed with 19-10 loss to Montana State. There were a lot of outraged fans after that loss. A loss to CSU could bring a lynch mob. They still lynch in Colorado don’t they? The dog in this series is 9-1 ATS. Big shot to Buffs. COLORADO.

Air Force +19 ½ at Tenn: No way the Vols can get up for this game after rousing win over Cal. Must take with the Fly Boys. FORCE.

N.Mexico -10½ at N.Mex St: Another good dog series. The puppy is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings. Lobos could only muster 6 last week against Portland State. The host Aggies had a nice win beating SE LA 30-15. NM STATE.

Troy NL at Florida St: Just don’t see Florida State having any interest in blowing away Troy after brutal battle with Miami. TROY.

Texas Tech -7 ½ at UTEP: Love the Minors getting more then a TD at home in what should be a high scoring game. Money line. Best bet. Red Raiders will get all they want. UTEP.

Now, for my NFL takes.

KC -3, Seahawks -6, Packers +3 ½, Browns -3.

Last week: 6-5. Best bets: 1-1
