A case can be made that West Coast teams headed to Dixie don’t fare well against in that passionate Southern environment.
Southern Cal did handle Arkansas easily, but the Trojans are a juggernaut. On the other hand Washington State fell hard at Auburn and California was torched at Tennessee.
Now this week, Arizona heads to Baton Rouge to face LSU. The Tigers opened as a 14½ point favorite in a game that should be decided by defense.
There were some close calls among the nation’s elite, but no major upsets. Two missed field goals cost Notre Dame the cover against Georgia Tech in the marquee matchup. This week it’s the rematch of Ohio State-Texas, won by the Longhorns in Columbus 25-22.
More on this one as we test the Week 2 card.
Ohio St +2 at Texas: The Longhorns started last year’s road to the national championship with seven straight covers. This season is off to a nice start with a blowout cover over North Texas. The Buckeyes are loaded, but the Horns look comfortable with Colt McCoy at QB. TEXAS.
Arizona +14½ at LSU (44): A huge opportunity for Mike Stoops to see just how far Zona has come from the bottom of the Pac 10. This is an afternoon start in Baton Rouge, which loves Saturday night games. However, humidity and the rare trip to the South offsets that advantage. LSU.
Va Tech -11 at UNC: The Hokies are 1-1 ATS in this series since joining the ACC. Too much special teams and depth to back the home conference dog. VA TECH.
C. Mich +27 at Michigan: We warned you last week about taking a Lloyd Carr coached team as a double-digit home favorite. Central played BC tough at home and should hang in as the Wolverines eye Notre Dame next week. C. MICH.
Auburn +20 at Miss St (38½): The Bulldogs couldn’t score against South Carolina and Auburn is far better. State can play defense, making the total a safer play. UNDER.
Kent +4 at Army: Dirty Dozen ramifications all over this bad boy. Kent will love playing in Michie Stadium. Attorney Glen Lerner might say "One score, that’s all." ARMY.
Stanford -10½ at San Jose St: The home Spartans could win this one outright. JOSE.
Toledo -9 at W.Mich: The Rockets played well in a 3-OT loss at Iowa State. Western is no Iowa State. TOLEDO.
UNLV +14 at Iowa St: Good spot for the Rebels with ISU looking ahead to state rival Iowa next week. UNLV.
Penn St +8 at Notre Dame: The game opened at 11, which was way too high. It’s coming down and we wish there was time to wait this out. Sorry Joe Pa, but at home the Irish should prevail by at least 10. ND
Colo St -2 over Colorado: This has been an underdog series and no team is lower than Colorado after losing to 1-AA Montana State. Look for a rebound. COLORADO
Last week: 5-5-2.
