Since there seems to be this silly need to rename each week of the college football season, how about Letdown Saturday?
After a scintillating series of finishes in games between last week’s Top 25 teams, we’re left with the scraps that come after the big party.
Rather than relive a forgettable pick performance, we move ahead with great vigor to what hopefully will produce our fourth parlay card payoff of 2006.
Oh, one thing. Note to UNLV. Maybe they should recruit a few Hawaiians instead of the 20 on the roster from California, including puzzled QB Rocky Hines.
Louisville -13½ at K-State: Cards coming off greatest win in school history last week against Miami. Unbeaten K-State is sipping Manhattans on campus waiting to pull a major upset. K-STATE.
Rice at Florida State: The Owls were brutal in a game they figured to cash in on emotionally against supposedly down Texas. Not that FSU is wild about Rice after blowing Bowden Bowl 8 to a Clemson team that gave up kicking. UNDER.
Minnesota at Purdue: Two 3-0 Big Ten teams clash in Boiler country, but the visiting Golden Gophers have been the far more impressive team. MINNY.
Cincinnati at Va Tech: The Bearcats for the longest time were covering the +29 against Ohio State. Blacksburg is not a nice place for visitors. VA TECH.
Utah State at BYU: The Cougars come off tough losses to Arizona and BC, where they played well. Utah State is 0-3 and should cancel. BYU.
West Virginia at ECU: The Pirates are 3-0 ATS and get the Mounties off a big win over border rival Maryland and already thinking Louisville. E.CAROLINA.
Arizona St at Cal: One of the better matchups this week as the winner joins Oregon as mostly likely to succeed USC if the Trojans slip up. CAL.
Colorado at Georgia: The king of the Dirty Dozen make a rare trip to Athens, where Dawgs bark loudest. Plus, Georgia has some defense. GEORGIA.
Temple at W.Michigan: We called Western’s outright upset win at Virginia. Temple should atone for all sins, like having a football program. WMU.
Wake at Ole Miss: The Demon Deacons are a great cover team when not a double-digit favorite. Rebs wishing they still had Eli. WAKE.
Tulane at LSU: The Tigers managed just 3 points in a classic against Auburn. They will pass 3 in the first series against Tulane. LSU
Notre Dame at Mich St: Best game of the day. This was the one I thought the Irish would lose. Spartans can’t wait to finish what they started last year. MICH ST.
And, the Friday tease.
N’western at Nevada: The Wolf Pack will enjoy the national television exposure against the disappointing Wildcats. NEVADA.
Almost forgot, favorites claimed a slim 26-22-2 edge over the dogs against the spread last week thanks to a 4-1 record on the added games board.
