After further review, referees
looking blind on football replays

Oct 3, 2006 4:50 AM

It’s tough these days to sit through a good football game, let alone a bad one.

If it’s not dumb announcers making stupid comments, there’s the punishment of play reviews. I did think reviews would be good, but they have proven how stupid some of the refs are. Remember when people would yell "Are you blind or what?"

Get this! I’m sitting on a nice bet with the Tigers to win the AL pennant and they can’t even win one game at home over the Royals, who lost 100. You can put a fork in Detroit, which will be lucky to win one against the Yanks.

Ahead to my plays this week.

Friday, Oct. 6

Louisville -33 at Mid Tenn St: Don’t see Louisville in the mood to crush this team. The MTSU defense comes up big in rare prime time ESPN game. MTSU.

Saturday, Oct. 7

Purdue +12 at Iowa: The Hawkeyes have no covers so far this year and don’t see one here. The Boilermakers can put points on the board and should stay within a TD. PURDUE.

Clemson -16 at Wake: The Tigers have been on a mighty roll since 34-33 loss in OT at BC. Clemson beat Florida State in Tallahassee as a four point dog, crushed North Carolina 52-7 and blitzed Louisiana Tech 51-0. I don’t know who they are mad at, but Wake is on their revenge list ( Tigers lost 31-27 last year). CLEMSON.

Kent -24 at Temple: Host Owls somehow got the cover last week but don’t see repeat. Golden Flashes are streaking. KENT.

San Diego St +27 at BYU: Revenge game for BYU, getting hammered by the Aztecs last year 31-10. Don’t see SD State getting 31 this year. Lay the 27. BYU.

Rice -2 at Tulane: Rice much improved as the 31-30 loss to Houston and 26-16 setback at UCLA would attest. The Owls are 3-0 SU and ATS in this series. RICE.

Stanford +30 at ND: The Irish can score but lack a lot on defense. Stanford has no offense so could actually make the Notre Dame defense look good. Cardinal 0-5 SU and ATS and won’t get any better here. N. DAME

Arizona +12 at UCLA: The Wildcats offense has been missing in action, averaging just 10 in five games. A big chunk of that (28) came against SF Austin. If the Bruins can get 4 TDs, they will cover. UCLA.

Oklahoma +6 at Texas: The Sooners still steaming over bad call loss at Oregon and have been waiting for Horns especially after crushing 45-12 loss last year in Dallas. Look for OU to get revenge and gain back some respect. OKLA (Best Bet)

UNLV +15 at Colo St. Since scoring 54 in opener against powerhouse Idaho St, the UNLV offense has gone south. Try 10, 13 and 3, the latter against arch rival Nevada. CSU can score and owns a very good defense. Coming home after two straight road games is bad for Rebels. COLO ST.

Virginia +6 at ECU: Cavaliers got much needed win last week as the offense seems to be getting it together. First-ever meeting figures to be close. VIRGINIA.

Akron +6 at Cincinnati: I finally got a win with the Bearcats last week. Their big time defense should again control the game. CINCY.

S.Carolina -7 at Kentucky: Another close one. Not sure of the mental state at South Carolina after super try last week against Auburn. Kentucky has covered three straight and may be up after losing last year 44-16. KENTUCKY.

Vandy -1 at Miss St: Commodores have proven itself on the road with covers at Michigan and Alabama. No reason not to win against an Ole Miss team that just doesn’t score. Vandy has covered last five in series. VANDY.

Oregon +5 at Cal: Should be one great game, though ABC will find a way to screw it up. The Bears are down right mean since humiliating opening loss at Tennessee, averaging over 40 and holding the opposition to less than 20. A big revenge game from last year’s OT loss in Eugene 27-20. CAL, Best Bet II.

La Tech +34 at Boise St: Broncs made a believer out of me last week. Really don’t see the Bulldogs staying close on the blue carpet. Lay number before it gets to 35. BOISE.

Sunday’s NFL picks:

I am smoking off last week’s 2-1! Just kidding.

Colts -19, Pats -10, Chiefs -3, 49ers -3½ (Do you think there is anything hooked up to the other end of Art Shell’s head set?), Steelers +3 ½ (Best Bet). On Monday, Broncos -3½.

FYI: Tid bit for you horse players. I was talking to a guy that owns a horse that will be running up at Golden Gate in the very near future. She is a first time starter named Yodelinforlynn and is ready to roll.
